A new courthouse was constructed between 1830 and 1840 at what is now Market Square; this building still serves as the centerpiece of downtown Ashtabula today. The courthouse complex included a jail (now demolished), several churches, public buildings such as a courtroom (now used as an art gallery), shops, a meeting hall, and other associated infrastructure necessary for county government operations during this period of significant growth within Ashtabula County. When Ohio achieved statehood in 1907, Ashtabula became Cleveland's new state capital; however, Because Cleveland had no school system within its city limits (as did Toledo), Ashtabulas public schools continued to operate under direct royal charter from Queen Victoriauntil1927 when they were replaced with municipal schools operating under district authority pursuant to provisions of provision 2111 et seq.. In 1925, following much discussion among residents about whether or not they should remain part of the United States after World War II ended, citizens voted overwhelmingly to secede from Ohio into their own independent nation known asthe United States Of America!
