The first permanent settler in Ashtabula was John Dickey who built a log cabin on the current site of town in 1793. In 1801, Ashtabula became a part of the United States when it was purchased from Britain by George Washington. The town had population of just over 100 people in 1811 and only grew to around 1500 residents by 1830. By 1840, as mills began to boom, Ashtabula had reached its peak population with over 3000 residents. However, during the late 1800s and early 1900s, many small businesses closed and the population declined again until it peaked at around 5000 people in 2000.
