Gun sights were first introduced in Ashtabula, Ohio in 1827. At that time, guns were only fitted with iron sights and could not be fired without the use of a pistol grip. The first gun sight was an adaptation of an old Arabic crossbow sight. This particular sight consisted of a small metal circle on a wooden rod that was affixed to the barrel of the gun. When the shooter aimed at the target, they would place their finger over this small metal circle and pull back on the rod to activate the crossbow system. The development of modern firearms necessitated new sighting systems that could be used with greater accuracy and safety. In 1847, Ashtabula Rifleman Company purchased a patent for what is now known as an "Ashtabula Pistol Grip Sight." This invention allowed handguns to be fired without having to hold onto a separate firearm grip. The pistol grip sight became popular because it resulted in less accidental firing and made it easier for shooters to line up their shots when using rifles or shotguns. By 1896, all handgun manufacturers had created their own types of sights which utilized different components such as turrets, adjustable magnification lenses, illuminated reticles and more. The Ashtabula Rifle Club was organized on July 4, 1892. The first meeting was held at the home of Jeremiah J. Goudreau. The club adopted a resolution to erect a rifle range in town and began to build the range with help from local citizens. On November 8, 1892, the Ashtabula Rifle Club hosted its first annual picnic which attracted more than 150 guests. In 1896, the club built a new clubhouse and decided to name it for its original president, John Dickson. In 1912, the club bought land east of town and started building a new clubhouse which they named for Captain George Prentice of the Ohio State Guard who had died in 1911 while serving in Cuba. On October 1, 1922, the Ashtabula Rifle Club changed its name to the American Legion Post #1 after adopting a resolution passed by their membership requesting that honor be given to their predecessor organization which had served gallantly during World War I and II. On May 3rd of each year since 1923 (except 1927), an Officers' Association Meeting is held at which officers representing all posts within our league are elected. This meeting provides opportunities for discussion and sharing ideas about future operations of our post including but not limited to: stabilization of finances; regulation of member dues; promotion/decreasing fees for memberships; changes in shooting program; formation or affiliation with other organizations.
Ashtabula, Ohio is a small town located in the U.S. state of Ohio. Ashtabula was founded in 1792 by Captain James Fenton and his wife Elizabeth. The town was named for General George Washington's home, Ashtabula Station, in Westmoreland County. In 1825, the village of Ashtabula was chartered as a city and became the county seat of Ashtabula County. The city was dissolved in 1898 and its citizens were moved to the new town of Lima which had been founded just east of Ashtabula on the Scioto River. The name "Ashtabula" ultimately derived from General George Washington's home and refers to both his role as Commander-in-Chief during the war with France and also to his ownership of land near the village where he spent much time during his lifetime. The population of Ashtabula peaked at over 21,000 in 1920 but has fallen since then due primarily to suburbanization. However, there are still a number of businesses and institutions active in the community that continue to play an important role in local history and culture. Some notable landmarks include First Congregational Church (founded 1812), State Fairgrounds (1893), Masonic Lodge No. 9 (built 1881), Western Reserve Academy (1910), Pemberton Pavilion (1889) and Oskar Blues Brewery (established 1865). Additionally, many residents have become involved with local politics or government through their roles as members of civic organizations or public servants such as firefighters, cops or teachers. Today, there are still a few independent businesses open within tight quarters downtown where commerce Row meets United Methodist Cemetery which is one block wide along High Street between Elmira Road southward and Fifth Street northward; this area is known locally as "the red zone." Though it may be difficult to find today because so much development has taken place within recent years outside of central business districts like Main Street/State Fairgrounds/Pemberton Pavilion etc., portions thereof remain largely unchanged since colonial times including several churches dating back to before 1800s; these include First Presbyterian Church built about 1790 on High Street near Court House Square; Second Presbyterian Church erected c 1830 on what is now Elmira Road west side opposite corner from First PresbyterianChurch; Third PresbyterianChurch built about 1840 on current site west side intersection Elmira Road & 5th Streets southward from 2nd Presbyterianschurch also known Moravian Episcopal church established c1786 & Zion Methodist Episcopal church Established 1859 situated northeast corner 2nd Presbyterianschurches main line west side main line courthouse square

The first purpose-built firearms sights were designed and built in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a French gunsmith. He patented his design, which was called the "Conte Rifle Sight." This sight consisted of a tube that ran through the barrel and was attached to the receiver by means of a screws. The front sight was made up of two circles that fit into each other and rotated around an axis that passed through the breech. The back sight consisted of two lines that ran perpendicular to each other and crossed at a point near the muzzle.
Ashtabula, Ohio is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. Ashtabula is part of the Cleveland-Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Ashtabula was made on the present site of town on May 10, 1814 by General George Rogers Clark during his military campaign against Native Americans. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson's lieutenant general and friend, Captain Ebenezer Ashtabula. Ashtabula became an important transportation hub due to its location at the confluence of the Maumee and Mahoning Rivers. In 1827, Ashtabula became one of nine townships in Cuyahoga County when it was created from parts of Holmes Township and Perry Township. The township had a total area of . In 1837, as part of the administrative changes accompanying land grants given to various counties in western Ohio following the Mexican–American War, Ashtabula received land east ofthe lower Mahoning River from Holmes Township and northwest of Sandusky Bay from Perry Township. The first school in Ashtabula opened in February 1792 under instruction from Reverend James Caldwell before he moved to Painesville that year. A new school building was erected on First Street between Washington and Clinton Streets in 1802 with classrooms upstairs and a basement used as storage until 1824 when an addition was made to create a three-story block structure which still stands today next door to Milliken's Drugs store on Main Street (now called US 2). Classes were held at this building until 1905 when Griggs Hall replaced it as the town's first high school; then again starting in 1906 until 1957 when it closed because enrollment went up too fast for funds available to maintain it. A second high school also opened but closed within five years due to low enrollment; however this building still stands today next door to Milliken's Drugs store on Main Street (now called US 2). This second high school served apprenticeship training for many local businesses beginning with Whetstone Lumber Company which began using Shopton Schoolhouse #1 as their shop floor back in 1924 followed by other businesses such as Jarratt & Snively which also used it before finally being sold off for use as office space by John Hynes Commercial Properties LLC after being vacated by faculty members during renovation work required for growth into Little Italy since one side now functions as retail storefront while another serves industrial/office uses; see picture below left: There are plans underway (see photo right) by Mayor Tom Barrett (who also serves as Treasurer) and City Council Member Alain Ziegler (a Democrat) among others suggest that both buildings could be preserved along with associated lot(s) providing enough funding shouldered through city coffers should either property become available or developer interested Today there are over 150 businesses located here giving ample opportunity for employment not only locally but throughout Northeast Ohio!
