In 1861, during the American Civil War, Ashtabula saw its share of action around town square as both sides fought for control over key strategic points such as Fort Harrison and Old Fort Townsend (now part of downtown). Someguns used in this conflict include cannons taken from Fort Harrison and pistols purchased by civilians from local merchants who had turned into soldiers at war time.

Ashtabula, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ashtabula County. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1811 by Congregationalist missionaries from New England and named for Ashtabula Creek, which flowed through its boundaries. Ashtabula is located on the southern border of Ashtabula County and is bordered to the north by Union Township, to the east by Youngstown, to the south by Trumbull County and to the west by Lake Erie. The first European settlers in what is now Ashtabula County were Congregationalists who arrived in 1811 as part of a group of Protestant missionaries sent by Massachusetts General Court order to preach Christianity to Native American tribes living east of it on both sides of the Cuyahoga River. They named their new community after nearby Ashtaraba Creek, which they thought would be a short name for an easily navigable stream due to its bend near downtown Ashtabulas original location on High Street between Clinton and Washington Streets. The town platting occurred quickly with multiple grants being issued over time including one from President James K. Polk on July 12, 1812 that awarded land along Ashtaraba Creek itself as well as adjacent parcels extending into Trumbull (now part of Youngstown) Township and Union (now part of Cleveland). Local residents donated or bartered goods or services in order to receive these grants which totaled some 236 acres (100 hectares). A second grant was issued December 8th following another successful donation drive resulting in more than $10 worth of goods being collected within 24 hours across all 10 townships encompassing much of today’s Ashtabula County excepting Trumbull which received only 4 acres (2 hectares). A final grant followed two years later on April 14th, 1814 when President James K Polk again awarded land along Ashtaraba Creek with an additional parcel extending into Cleveland proper also including adjoining parcels lying within present-day Trumbull Township and Union (later Cleveland Heights) Municipality – totaling 256 acres (100 hectares). In total,Congregationalism had established about 150 churches or missions throughout Northeast Ohio before American independence taking hold in 1776; however this number rapidly increased during Reconstruction under Presidents Andrew Johnson & Ulysses S Grant with over 1,500 missionaries appointed just prior to America’s entry into World War II . Today most people identify themselves as Protestants but there are also sizable numbers Catholic and Buddhist followers scattered throughout town limits dating back centuries ; nonetheless architectureurally significant buildings still reflect traditional religious practices found among numerous denominations . In recent decades many residents have taken up careers outside their homes providing ample opportunity for housing , education & retail .....In short While some aspects have changed incessantly due primarily to economic forces such as strip mining & manufacturing businesses relocated elsewhere while other recreation opportunities dwindled ..........the characteristics that remain unchanged are rich traditions related football , baseball , basketball &cycling
