Ashtabula, Ohio is a city in the United States located on the lower Ohio River. As of the 2010 census, the population was 452. The city was founded in 1800 and incorporated as a town in 1826. Ashtabula is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Mentor, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ashtabula has been inhabited by various cultures for thousands of years. In 1795, General George Washington ordered Captain John Montresor to attack and capture as much Indian culture as possible while he was visiting Fort Pitt on the PA border. Montresor captured over 100 chiefs and their families and took them to spend time at Fortress Cumberland where they were shown some American firearms that had been brought over from Europe. This event helped create what is known as "The American Revolution." In 1803, Ashtabula became the capital of Ohio Territory when Congress passed an act creating that territory from parts of Northwest Indiana, Northwest Michigan and parts of Pennsylvania adjacent to Lake Erie. On November 3, 1803, Ashtabula was officially chartered as a town with James Ketchum its first mayor. The first courthouse was built in 1824 on Federal Hill overlooking downtown In 1830–31 Chief Factor William Ladd made an exploratory trip upriver to find a new site for his village on or near what would become Miamisburg; he found no promising sites upstream so returned home without developing his idea any further than sketching out rough boundaries around his village which he named "Albion". Albinia soon developed into Alfred (later Ashtabula), after Chief Factor William Ladd's visit with Town Planner John Morehead about settlement possibilities along both banks of the river below Miamisburg proper (the present day West Side). A group led by Coles & Storymiller successfully petitioned US President Andrew Jackson for statehood on December 12th, 1837; this Act set off a series of political events leading up to Statehood in March 4th 1840 which also included becoming one of fifteen original counties in Ohio – all but two being carved out specifically for Metropole Township including Alfred (then Albion) within it! After many years living under differing spelling forms such as Ashtabula (1838), Athaba (1840), Aishtabullah (1841), Ashtaubulia (1843), Atbashtabulapha (1846), Atbatubaquiphae(?)) before finally settling upon Alfred we can only imagine how pleased locals must have been when officials postmarked their official map announcement dated October 6th 1850 “all towns changed their names to Alfred”! It should be noted that even though incorporation papers indicate that Mayor James Ketchum assumed office January 1st 1851 following Mayor David Buell's resignation due to illness; actual municipal government operations began on April 1st according to charter law – making James Ketchum effectively mayor until May 15th when Councilman Solomon Davenport assumed office following election results announced shortly before closing night festivities celebrating victory over Tecumseh County forces during The Battle Of Tiffin Creek!... Fishers became effective July 1st 1861 after meeting August 25th ultimo adjournment date set by Court Order No 572/61 !! Fish killing season opened September 11th 1861!!! The city also hosted several annual events including the Ohio State Fairgrounds All-American Bowl game in 1937 and 1981; Expo '88 (an international exposition%); and the Dayton Open Air Market every October since 1945
