Ashland, Ohio is an unincorporated community in Jackson County, Ohio, United States. The population was 461 at the 2010 census. It lies northwest of the city of Cleveland and southwest of the village of Northfield. The first Europeans to see what is now Ashland were traveling by land through Jackson County on their way to the Great Lakes region in search of new land to settle. They named their new settlement after a small stream they passed along, as it was one of only a few places in that area with water available year-round. The town began as a small farming community with just a few homes and several businesses built around 1900. By 1930, however, Ashland had grown into a sizable town with over 100 dwellings and many businesses including two banks, three restaurants, four grocery stores, two movie theaters and one department store The economic boom that followed World War II helped increase population numbers even further as people came to work in newly developed industries such as trucking and manufacturing. Today, Ashland remains an active community with vibrant local economy based on tourism and light industrial production. One recent change has been the addition of a large mixed-use development called The Shops at Tower City which anchors much of downtown Ashland’s commercial district

Another early weapon flashlight wascreated in 1879 by J.B.Spencer and it used a mercury-vapor lightbulb with an attachment that allowed it to be attached to the barrel of a rifle or shotgun. A number of different companies made gun flashes over the years including Willys Firearms, Winchester Repeating Arms Company, Browning Arms Company, Springfield Armory Company and Savage Arms Corporation. Ashland, Ohio is a town in Ashland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,872 at the 2010 census. The city was founded by James Ketchum in 1827 and named after Ashland Township in Kent County, Indiana. It became an incorporated municipality in 1907. In 1936 it merged with the neighboring town of Beechgrove to form the current city of Ashland. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ashland were French explorers François Marquette and Louis Jolliet on July 26, 1669; they found the area inhabited by "Natives" (as they were then called) who lived along the Scioto River which separated their homeland from that of the Iroquois nations south of Lake Erie. Jesuit missionaries arrived later that year and began missionary work among these people. By 1715 there were over 1,000 Native Americans living within modern-day Ashland Township walls. In 1827 James Ketchum founded what would eventually become the City of Ashland on land he had purchased from one of those Native American tribesmen. At first the town was called Beech Grove because so many beech trees were cut down for lumber during its early years; however, due to a lack of an official name Ketchum chose "AshLAND." When Beech Grove merged with nearbytowns such as Elmira in 1907, all three towns adopted "ASHLAND" as their unofficial namesakes - even though only BEECH GROVE continued to use "ASHLAND" for official purposes until 1936 when it too merged into contiguous communities OF Elmira and Groveland. The original downtown section of Ashland was built between 1830-35 by businessman David Satterfield as part of his plans to revive local trade following a lull in business activity caused by Panic Of 1837 & ensuing deflationary forces throughout national economies across America (& Europe). One can still find remnants of Satterfield's architecture includingIsaac Watts Coffee House (now abandoned),the old water tower & wagons used for loading coal onto barges at Smith's dock & further upriver atthe former Farmers National Bank building now home to First United Methodist Church (1892). Downtown also includes several architecturally significant buildings such as Lyman Briggs' Opera House (c1836), Griggs Block (1860-61), Paine Building (1890s),and Masonic Temple No 2 (1910s). ps: griggs block/paine building are heritage listed structures
Ashland was founded in 1795 as a small town on the Scioto River. It grew rapidly, becoming an important manufacturing center in the region. Ashland was named after General Ashby, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as president of Ohio. The community eventually annexed neighboring towns, including Toledo, in 1853. In 1916, Ashland became a city and has since grown to include over 100 businesses and 2,000 residents.
