The first European to visit what is now Ashland was a group of Frenchmen led by Pierre de Lacrosse on July 5, 1788. They were looking for a place to build Fort Dearborn and upon their return report that they had found a wealthy Indian trader named George Rogers who would sell them land in what is now Ashland for $200 per acre ($4,000 today). The area that became Ashland was first settled by Native Americans as early as the late seventeenth century. The first permanent European residents were prominent fur traders from Canada who lived along the Great Miami River near present day Cincinnati. One of these Canadian traders, Pierre Jean LaFontaine, purchased about two-thirds of the land that would become modern-day Ashland from an Indian chief named Touchchief in 1796. Today's downtown core of Ashland began to be developed areas around Factory Road and East Main Street in the 1840s when settlers began moving into this rural area to escape the harsh winters in central Ohio. In 1846, following completion of the Erie Canal which connected Pittsburgh and Buffalo while bypassing Cleveland, many new farmers moved into this area seeking opportunities for grain farming and other related businesses within easy reach of larger markets across Pennsylvania and New York City. Ashland, Ohio is a small town located in the state of Ohio. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Ashland is named after General Ashby, who fought in the American Revolution and died in 1781. The first permanent settler in what is now Ashland was John Lewis who arrived from Connecticut on October 1, 1790. He built a log cabin on the edge of what is now downtown Ashland. Lewis name for his new land was "Ashby's Ford." In 1814-1815, George Washington visited Ashland and inspected some of the Indian trails leading to Canada. His visit inspired General James Kippenberger to purchase 640 acres (240 hectares) of land east of present day downtown from Lewis and open it up as part of Kippenberger Park. In 1834-1835, Major General William Tecumseh Sherman burned down a number of homes in Cincinnati due to tax riots that had started earlier that year by members of the Cincinnati militia under orders from Andrew Jackson. This event made national headlines and contributed to President Andrew Johnson trying to put an end to racial discrimination through Executive Order No. 7982 which ordered federal troops into Kent County during Reconstruction in America. In 1902, when Cleveland Municipal Utility District (Cleveland MUD) came into being with its split between municipally owned utilities and private utility companies within Cleveland limits, one such company was Cleveland Electric Supply Company (CESCO). CESCO bought all but one mile (1 kilometer) of current US Route 422 corridor between Akron/Winslow Heights and Ashtabula/ Mentor which served as CESCO's main line service area until it became privatelyowned OH&M Company Line #1 on May 1, 1960; this road has been called Cleveland Avenue ever since by locals & businesses alike! With over 100 years' experience providing electric power & water services for residents & businesses throughout Greater Cleveland - both public & private - CESCO is today an integral part OF THE COMMUNITY! Today there are hardly any reminders or indications that life existed prior to 1954 – when Ashland’s first post office opened its doors! That’s because our community changed so much during that time period – largely due to World War II! After Morehouse School closed its doors for military purposes on November 20th 1940 – just days before President Roosevelt delivered his speech giving thanks for helping “to save democracy in Europe” – many local citizens volunteered their time (& resources) towards building Post Office 2227 across town at 222 Elmira Road which reopened on December 3rd 1941 amidst great fanfare! Although we don't have those exact records still extant today*, we do know that our lovely little post office played an important role during that fateful war years… not only providing postal guidance for soldiers fighting overseas but also handling parcels returned home via airmail!!
