Ashland is a town in Ashland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Combined Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Ashland was James Goodloe and his family who arrived in 1785. They were followed by John Goodloe and his family in 1802. In 1824, George Washington Carver founded Carver's Mills which became one of the largest cottonseed mills in the world. The city of Ashland was platted on May 7, 1861 by Samuel Brown with a population of 350 residents. On December 12, 1871, Brownsville was annexed to Ashland and its population grew to 2,500 residents. In 1907 the town post office was moved from Zanesville toAshland because it had been receiving mail there twice as often as Zanesville did. In 1912 an insurance company called First National Life built a warehouse on Main Street that served as the first local hospital (the present day Village Hospital). During World War II many factories were developed in Ashland including Paintshop Company which produced aircraft paint for USAAF pilots; Houghton Mifflin Paper Company where paper products were made such as chewing gum and tissue; Kress Corporation which manufactured door handles; Midwest Bell Telephone Laboratories (later AT&T) located on Main Street; Wilson Rubber Products Incorporated (later Goodyear Tire & Rubber); Wistarite Ore Mine near Gahanna; and Chisholm Glass Company producing windows and other glass products until it closed its doors in 1977. A major shopping center opened up around this time called "The Mall". This mall has since been demolished but portions of it still stand today including Grandview Shopping Center on West Side Highway between I-480 and Interstate 271/271A east of downtown Akron

Ashland, Ohio is a town in Ashland Township, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,554 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Middletown metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Ashland was John Hargrave in 1796. He and his family moved to the area from Derby Township, Connecticut. In 1814 he built a tavern on the site of present-day Centerville and named it after himself: "Ashland Tavern". By 1830 there were 12 taverns in Ashland with a total population of 2,500. In 1837 German immigrant George Wanka founded the first known gristmill in what would become Ashland; it processed lumber for local homes and businesses. Wanka's mill continued to run until 1906 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1854 James Ladd purchased land east of Centerville along the Scioto River for $5 per acre (1/4 mile²). He named his new township after himself – "Laddstown" – and construction began on what would eventually be called Ladd's Mill Road. The village that developed around Ladd's Mill soon became known as Ashland after its founder's birthplace, Germany. During World War I, many workers from Allentown came to work at Ladd's Mill; some 20% of all Allied munitions produced in Ohio were made here during those war years. On October 6, 1916Ashland residents voted to form a city government which they did not do again until 1925 when they adopted a charter providing for an elected mayor and councilors with responsibility for various areas including housing and public utilities; also included were responsibilities for trash collection, zoning changes (including adding acres to centerville), street maintenance/paving etc.; these powers remained with townspeople until 1952 when they were transferred to Cuyahoga County under statehood legislation. On January 1st 1924 Mayor James Pomeroy resigned effective February 1 due to ill health following two terms as Mayor - making him only the second person ever impeached by their own community (the other being fellow township supervisor George Baines who served one term) . A special election was held on April 3rd 1924 which resulted in Abram Jankiewicz becoming Mayor instead replacing Pomeroy who had been incapacitated since 1916 due to pneumonia caused by meningitis brought over from Europe where he had worked as an ambulance driver before coming home sickly pregnant wife Alice died giving birth six months later; Jankiewicz served out the rest of Pomeroy’s term ending December 31st 1926
