Ashland, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ashland County. The population was 43,752 at the 2010 census[1]. It is part of the Akron–Canton, OH-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Ashland was French explorer Jean Nicolet in 1699. He named it after his home town of Aix-en-Provence in France. In 1801, General James Kieft established a post on the Scioto River as part of his land grant to the Shawnee people from Ottawa County, Illinois. The first store in Ashland opened its doors on Fifth Street in 1803.[2] In that year, John Fenton created an artificial body of water called Fenton's Lake which served as a landing place forboats carrying goods up and down the Scioto River. In 1814, two years after Columbus discovered America, American traders founded a trading post at present day downtown Ashland by trading with Native Americans who had been living there for centuries before that time. They called their settlement Fort Loudoun because one of their early traders was Colonel John Loudon (1754-1827). In 1816, when Captain George Steedman explored and charted much of central Ohio for United States troops duringthe War of 1812 he enters into trade with Chief Tecumseh's band near what is now downtown Ashland[3]. By 1830 much industry had developed around manufacturing products such as textiles and shoes but not until about 1860 did this develop into an automotive factory complex producing cars like those built by General Motors beginning in 1918.[4] The area currently known as Downtown Ashland began to be built up vigorously during World War II when many companies shipped their workers off to war production plants all over northwestern Ohio including Detroit where they produced tanks and other military hardware; however this intense industrial output gradually stopped after 1945 due to lack of demand among consumers within Michigan and elsewhere outside North America Today DowntownAshland still has many businesses located therein including banks, law firms/accountants/finance companies etc., although most have since moved out into adjacent neighborhoods ortowns across town while some larger local businesses have taken root like Chambers Market,[5][6][7] which operates primarily within Town Center mall (formerly anchored by JCPenney) just blocks away from Main Street originally serving mostly smaller retailers before being converted into an open air market (with several large outdoor Vendors spaces) that covers almost 2 acres located atop one bank parking garage

Ashland, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. Ashland is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's history dates back to 1795 when it was organized as a village under the name of Hopewell Junction. The first settler in what is now Ashland was Pierre Ballou and his family who arrived around 1800. By 1814, all of present-day Stark County had been annexed by the state of Ohio and Hopewell Junction became part of the new county seat at Sandusky. In 1821, an act was passed providing for an election for trustees to manage public property within the new township which included Ashland Township. In 1836,Ashland Township became a full-time community with a board of trustees chaired by Mayor Samuel Aiken and treasurer James Prentice serving as its first officials. That same year saw the opening of what would eventually become one of America's most famous tourist attractions - Ashland Race Course - which offered horse racing throughout much of the 19th century until it closed in 1957. In 1875,Ashland received its own post office which continued to serve until 1958 when it merged into that of Sandusky. Between 1830 and 1860 there were over 100 water mills operating in and around present-day Ashland including those on Canfield Road (now Ashtonshire Drive) just south of downtown; these were all destroyed by fire during prohibition era prohibition raids by Ulysses S Grant's troops in 1865-1866 after they discovered local brewing operations without permits or licences! Today only two remnants from that earlier water milling days remain: one still stands on Canfield Road adjacent to Interstate 476 (the "Canfield Toll Road"), while another has been demolished several blocks east along Ashtonshire Drive near modern day University Heights Elementary School - both being listed as contributing resources to International Historic Preservation Services' nomination for nomination for nomination for inclusion on National Register Of Historic Places .
