Ashland is a small town in Findlay County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,914 at the 2010 census. The town is named for General Ashburton, who fought in the American Revolution and later became the governor of Ohio. The first settlers in what is now Ashland were farmers living near the then- incorporated village of Findlay. They called their land "the common" and built homes on two hills that overlooked their farmsteads. In 1811, three men from Delaware County came to Weakley Township to purchase some of these holdings and name it after General John Ashburton because he had helped them during the War of 1812. In 1821, when Akron was founded by George Washington Carver and others as an industrial center, many people followed Carver toAshland to partake in its newfound prosperity. By 1830, however, most of the factory workers in town had moved away or been replaced by Scotsmen who had arrived with cargo ships called Cumberland and Accommodation from London Drove down Main Street . . . A few more years saw little change until 1840 when a post office was established at what is now downtownAshland with mail delivery coming once a week from Akron." In 1840 there were 5 businesses operating within one mile of downtown including: a grocery store (Foster & Wesson), saddlery (Beard & Griggs), tailor shop (Hutchinson & Howe), bank (Carnegie) and doctor's office (Drury). At this time only one block wide main street ran through downtownAshland with smaller streets branching off here and there like today. This lack of space may have contributed to why by 1850 just fourteen businesses still operated out of downtown while another sixty-four businesses were licensed but did not open because they could not find enough customers or space on main street. This lack of infrastructure also hampered economic development as businesses struggled trying to keep up with new technology which rapidly changed how people worked and bought goods. Despite all these challenges Downtown Ashlanders managed to maintain its identity as an important commercial center throughout much of the 19th century." By 1900 there were thirteen stores open on Main Street providing groceries, clothing services, notions stores etc., sixteen saloons including eleven serving beer/wine/liquor plus one cigar store which functioned as a bazaar selling rare items such as ivory figurines

Ashland, Ohio is a city in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,457 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskingum County. The first European to set foot in what is now Ashland was George Rogers Clark on July 11, 1788 when he and four other men explored the area between Tiffin and Lima Rivers. He named the area "Ashland" after his home state of Virginia. The first permanent settler in what would become Ashland was John Prentice on November 3, 1814 when he purchased all of present-day Muskingum Township from David Clough for $1,000 cash. Prentice built a cabin on the banks of the Cuyahoga River near where it joins the river today. In 1817, Isaac Brock built a mill on Bigelow Creek east of modern day Ashland. This milling community grew rapidly due to its location and good access to water supplies. By 1830 there were over 20 mills operating in Ashland including six owned by Brock himself. In 1831, James Fenton acquired land adjoining Brock's mill site and began developing it into an agricultural town with stores and homes for settlers." An Agricultural Society meeting was held on October 25th at which Fenton recommended that a school be established in the town center so that "the children may have occasion to learn something useful". A committee was formed September 15th with Fenton as president and Elisha Sherwin as secretary/treasurer; they traveled to Cleveland to purchase suitable brick buildings for use as a town hall and high school respectively; these structures remain extant today within downtownAshland as part of Main Street Historical District.. On January 6th 1861 Ashland became one of three townships (the others being Zanesville and Seneca) within Muskingum County when it was organized from parts of Stark County that had voted not to secede from Ohio during the American Civil War . During this time Grady & Co., Lumber Merchants opened up shop next door @ 114 West Third Street - one of only two businesses open in downtownAshland throughout most of 1861 before moving out completely two years later due largely to Union military action around Cleveland deep inside muskingum county

Ashland became an important stop on the Underground Railroad, helping fugitive slaves escape to freedom.
