The first Europeans to visit what is now Ashland were French traders who landed there in 1680 during the French and Indian War. settlement began in 1786 when John Dennison sold 640 acres (260 km²) of his estate for $1,500 to James Finley and others who established a farmstead on it. In 1814, General Philip Schuyler granted 20 acres (8 hectares) east of town to George Aiken as part of his donation towards building an academy at Chillicothe. This gift helped lay the foundation for Ashland's current downtown district that covers most of today's central business district and includes many historic buildings dating back to before 1814. In 1828, two brothers by the name of Stillman bought 1 acre (0.40 km²) north-west corner lot in town from Jethro Farnsworth for $100 cash which they used as their farmstead until moving away about 1840 when they built an addition to their home which still stands today -Stillman House National Historic Landmark. More than 150 years later this house still stands as one of downtown Ashland's most recognizable landmarks with its large front window filled with panes made from recycled glass from old car windows! Another early settler was Elias Howe who moved into town in 1826 after purchasing 100 acres (40 hectares) on Beaver Creek south-west of present daytown limits from Daniel Boone.. He started out by building a log cabin called "Beavercreek" near where Beaver Creek runs into Mahoning River just east side Main Street today's core business district boundaries between FirstEnergy Stadium & White Castle Casino across Route 602! In 1830 he erected another log cabin also known as "Butterfly" 2 miles west northwest off modern day Fourth Street opposite White Castle Casino property line on what would become today's north side street grid -Wee Folk Road!. Howe had been born around 1792 near Lancaster County PA so his Cabin could be considered even earlier American pioneers! Howe was active member/founder/director/member emeritus*of select group formed in 1915 responsible for land disposal along Mahoning River flood plain below river bridge leading into University Heights neighborhood thenceforth commonly referred to simply as "Howe Prairie". That same year legislation was passed appropriating $5,000 dollars ($ then worth over $3500 TODAY!) selected by board composed chiefly thereof including Mayor Abram Brownell within three months thereafter entitled "Estate Settlement Act", resulting in purchase by City Council & deed recorded 10 Sep '15 under date 25 Nov 15 – acquisition & condemnation opened 5 Mar 16 thru process etc., bringing final annexation 3 Apr 2016….. A third early settler was Nicholas Longacre who purchased 7 1/2 acres (3 ha), northeast corner lot from Jethro Farnsworth for $125 cash on 12 Dec 1786 – making him one among very few Americans ever able to own land outright outside colonies!! His parcel included much later parcels extending all around town seen collectively forming our present central business district…. Following incorporation as a village on 11 Jan 1800 following vote by residents convened therein under direction given by Trustees Samuel Douglass & Jeremiah Dixon properties situated therein were surveyed & laid out conformably thereto named: First Settlers Village Site; Second Settlers Village Site; Third Settllers Village Site." The original lots being offered ranged from 0 ½ mile square upriver past Ferry Landing (& Lots Nos 111 7th St NW – 121st St NW), Clermont Avenue SW [now West Side Drive] through Honeymoon Lake downriver past present day Market Square East [now KFC Plaza] thence southwest along Wabash AvenueNW almost due southwardly terminates at Dearborn Rd…." All lots were numbered starting with Lot No’s 1-6 inclusive…………………. So much for democracy—the trustees only drew lots numbers starting with No ‘1′…………………. Despite this lacklustre start(s), By 1861 more than 200 settlers had arrived squatting around Lots Nos 111 7th St NW – 121st St NW; Honeymoon Lake; West Side Drive; Dearborn Rd…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. During my stay here I did some surveying myself coming close enough occasionally but never got too close 😕 And yet despite not having any tools or experienced surveyors with me I managed several errors totaling about 3 feet inaccurate straight lines running across… map areas…..I have no doubt that without me those errors would have cost us dearly if we had won!!!

Ashland, Ohio is a small town located in the center of Ashland County, Ohio. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ashland was founded in 1821 by Captain John Treat and his family. The first post office in Ashland was established in 1824. The town's name comes from an Indian word meaning "a meadow with ash trees." In 1828, Captain Treat donated a large tract of land to be used as a town square. In 1830, the first school opened in Ashland and taught grades one through eight. By 1850, there were six schools in Ashland and over 100 residents. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln visited Ashland and dedicated a public park near downtown to honor General Ulysses S Grant. The park has been called "the most important park on Columbus' East Side." In 1908, the United States Post Office moved from its original location on Main Street to what is now First Avenue because of new postal regulations that focused on transportation efficiency rather than architecture or design considerations. Today, many businesses operate inside what was once the post office building including Kirby's Pizza & Pastry which serves up delicious pizza since 1978; Lowe's Hardware; Jiffy Lube; Subway; Starbucks; Amy's Baking Company and more!
