Ashland, Ohio is a town in Ashland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Ashland was James Purdy in 1812. He and his family built a cabin on the bank of the Maumee River. In 1815, John Marshall founded the village of Miamisburg in today's Anson County. When Miamisburg disbanded, Purdy moved to Ashland and started a successful tannery. In 1830, Rufus Jones came to Ashland and started an agricultural enterprise that lasted for many years; he raised corn, peas, potatoes and other vegetables on his farmstead until 1865 when he retired to live at home with his daughter Sarah Ann Jones. One hundred fifty acres of this land later became campus Quadrangle Park where students can play football or basketball during their lunch hour today while also benefiting from irrigation systems that provide water for lawns and gardens as well as manufacturing plants near campus buildings like Randolph Hall and Butler Hall which are used by local businesses such as Beasley’s Drug Store and JCPenney; among others .
