In 1830, when Ashland Township was organized from portions of Centre County, its first president (George Washington) selected as its first justice of peace James Kapp from Portsmouth Township north of Lebanon Valley because he had been particularly active in local politics for many years preceding that time. In 1834 Kapp married Lydia Jarratt who became ashlanders' second female mayor after serving one term as mayor pro tem for George Wirtz's unsuccessful bid for governor that year; she later served two terms as mayor under Wirtz before dying suddenly at age 54 while pregnant with their only child Rufus Chase Kapp Jr.). During those early years much activity took place at Niles which has still been remarked upon by some residents: "There must have been something going on here every day." The first schoolhouse building was erected there around 1840; but due to lack of funding it burned down three times between 1840 and 1845! A new schoolhouse facility was built just east of Niles along Beavercreek Road sometime after this fire; but again it caught on fire and this time it destroyed most or all traces of what had once been located there including both classrooms and library shelves! Bishop Heiman established his own seminary adjoining Niles soon thereafter – thus giving rise to another humorous anecdote about Ashland’s early years: “While Bishop Heiman lectures Christianity to young ladies walking through our streets one evening [1850], Mr. Bevan(?) walks up behind him carrying a barrel filled with dynamite disguised as flowers…Mr. Bevan dropped his load right below where Bishop Heiman sat preaching to children!” After leaving Niles following its fourth fire Godfrey & Company opened up shop on Main Street northeast corner Third Avenue between First Street (later renamed University Avenue) and Fourth Street – becoming one of America’s earliest grocery stores! It continued doing so until 1916 when grocer Iver Cray merged into United Grocery Stores Inc., displacing Godfrey & Company which closed its doors permanently that year having grown too large for smaller competitors like warehouse store Bethlehem Steel Corp.–the last store remaining open until 1984 when it shuttered due to changing demographics.) From then until 1976ASHLAND TOWNSHIP HAD ITS ONLY GAS STATION ON BEVERCREEK ROAD ! They sold gas here until 1975 when they retired their equipment usage because natural gas became available everywhere else! However they will continue selling gasoline outside their old premises until they sell out completely….lol).
