Ashland, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio that was founded in 1827. The population was 1,823 at the 2010 census. Ashland is located northeast of Dayton and west of Cincinnati. The first settler in Ashland was Nicholas Percival, who arrived in 1827. He named his land "Ashland" after his father's home country, England. In 1830, John Stephenson settled on a farm about two miles east of present-day Ashland and built a gristmill which still stands today. The first store in town was established by WM Hutton in 1831 and the first post office was opened December 5, 1832. The early days of Ashland were difficult; development wasn't easy due to lack of transportation and the high cost of inputs such as lumber and water supplies needed for agriculture. However, with perseverance and hard work, the community began to thrive over time; by 1860 it had become one of THE most successful small towns in central Ohio! In 1865, when the American Civil War started, many people left their homes to fight (many did so because they couldn't afford to stay). Many members of the town's original families enlisted or volunteered for military service - including some who would later be enshrined as icons associated with Ashland: John Stephenson Sr., Nicholas Percival's son-in-law Edwin Moseley (the first mayor),WM Hutton's grandson Abram Hewitt (founder/president/director emeritus of United States Steel), WM Hutton's great granddaughter Eliza Hewitt Townsend and WM Hutton himself! During World War I many residents served on both sides - many from within their own communities rather than moving away altogether like so many other Americans did. One resident even became Major General James Buel - making him one of only a handful civilians ever to achieve this rank during World War I! After the war ended there were few opportunities for new businesses to open up due to federal prohibition laws which had been passed following the warring states' seceding from America proper! However entrepreneur Nathaniel Dowling saw an opportunity not too far away – he set up a brewery on Main Street – eventually becoming one of America’s largest brewers! Today much has changed since then; apart from Amazon HQ2 taking place just outside town limits – no major business has sprung up within walking distance like once did (!?) – but that doesn’t mean life isn’t pretty good here; indeed it often feels more rural than urban thanks largely to constant growth rates among our close-knit communityfolk 🙂
Ashland, Ohio was founded in 1788 by General George Washington and his army. The city was named for Ashland Township, in which it was located. In 1870, the city of Cleveland took over the management of Ashland Township.
