On November 2, 1830, Ashtone Township residents voted to form a village and name it Ashtone Village. On January 25, 1837, village charter number 611 was granted to Ashtone Village by Governor James Klineday as approved by referendum from all township electors voting thereon including those living within both villages: "That said Congregation may be styled Aftonesborough." On February 15th same year cornerstone for First Presbyterian Church (later replaced with First Baptist Church) was laid by Gov't Commissioners Phillip Halleck and Rev'd Dr Nathaniel Whetstone; this church still stands today across from modern day High School building on Main Street corner Third Street – Aftonesborough’s original parish center or core business district which served all three villages together until Ohiopyle consolidated into one community early 20th century). The first post office opened at Aftonesborough on October 3rd 1840(!) by Major Ebenezer Sibley with Pte David Wilcox serving as Postmaster; mail service continued through 1865 when Centerville took over operations due to lack of space at new post office location just west of present day High School building where Centerville Community Center now stands – finally decommissioned September 1969 after more than 50 years service! Ashland is a town in Ashland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ashland County. The community was founded in 1812 by John Fenton and others as a small outpost on the Scioto River near modern day Toledo. In 1816, Ashland became part of the Northwest Territory and in 1827 it became part of the United States. As an Indian reservation, it was closed in 1830 but reopened two years later as a town under white jurisdiction. The first post office was established in 1837 and named after John Fenton's father-in-law, Amos Prentice; it opened at what is now Park Place. In 1840, the town plat included land for a new courthouse and jail which were built on present day State Road 7 south of downtown. The first courthouse burned down in 1865 but eventually replaced with the current building which was completed in 1870. As one of the few towns to remain within Ohio's boundaries following its request for statehood during its 19th century agricultural boom (the other being Cleveland), Ashland experienced rapid growth from its incorporation until World War II when postwar economic consolidations caused local industry to decline along with joblessness rates among African Americans who had helped make Ashland their cityscape since prewar days. However, over time development has led toAshlanders reputation as "the most racially tolerant city in America." Today there are major retail businesses including Sears Holdings Hathaway Home Services Inc., Macy's second largest retailer after Sears Co., Dollar General Stores Inc., Belk Sporting Goods Inc., JCPenney Holding Co., PetSmart Incorporated, Applebee's restaurant chain, First National Bank & Trust Company and many smaller businesses catering to all income levels while still maintaining an open social atmosphere that encourages cultural diversity through public events such as art exhibits, music festivals and plays throughout the year The former Pioneer Electric Light plant located on Main Street east of downtown currently houses Huntington University’s School of Business Administration which moved into its current building starting Fall 2017
The town of Ashland was founded in 1786 by George Washington. The town's first post office was established in 1787. The town grew rapidly and by 1800, it had a population of about 350 people. In 1814, the U.S. government purchased the land around Ashland from the original owners for $10,000. The new owners built a small fort to defend their land against Native Americans.
