Ashland, Ohio is a city in Defiance County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,852 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Defiance County. The name "Ashland" originated from an Indian word meaning "the place where the ash tree grows." In 1814, General James Wilkinson and his army overran the Shawnee village of Una and plundered its stores and homes. The General's troops deserted him and Wilkinson returned to Ashland without his artillery; he had lost all his equipment in India. In 1816-1817, two years after Wilkinson's return to Ashland, General David Hunter destroyed much of the town with cannonballs fired from horseback while it slept. A post office was established at Ashland in 1819. The Cincinnati & Northwestern Railroad connected Ashland with Cincinnati on July 1, 1847. The first store in town was built by Wm H Macy on Main Street in 1830. By 1840 there were nine stores and thirty-six businesses in the community of about 2,500 people. One hundred years later only thirteen business establishments remain within the current boundaries ofAshland City limits - eleven restaurants (seven within city limits and four outlying areas), one hotel/motel (threewithin city limits), one printing office (one within city limits) as well as five schools: three elementary schools (grades K-6), one middle school (7th through 8th grades), and one high school (9th through 12th grades). In 1906 construction began on what would become both downtowns for Ashton Valley Shopping Center anchored by JCPenney and Sears Roebuck departments along with a movie theater which opened that year called Republic Pictures which changed its name to Regal Cinemas lattitude Paramount Theatre before closing operations in 2009 due to economic reasons and being converted into apartments after serving as a warehouse sat Union Terminal Building which housed local railways including now CSX Transportation and previously served as the Ashley Furniture Showroom until it closed in 2006 when restrictions placed on displays because of asbestos concerns made it impossible for any other tenant to survive
