The first settler in what is now Ashland was named John Ash by his father, who owned a farm thereabouts in the late 18th century. John's son and grandson also settled there. The community took its name from an early resident, Samuel Ashby. A post office called "Ashland" was established in 1824 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. A sawmill on the Scioto River began operating near present-day Ashland in 1827; it continued to be active until 1902. The grist mill built about 1840 became known as the "Atkinson Mill". It operated until it burned down on July 3, 1888. Today, most businesses within the town are located along Main Street or University Avenue; several local churches also have property within town limits. According to the 2010 census,Ashland has one school – Grays Ferry Elementary School – which serves students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade; two stores (one family-owned and one independently run); three churches (two Lutheran and one Methodist); two residences (an apartment complex and a house with a attached garage); four businesses (four individual proprietorships) – including two that offer services such as plumbing, heating/ cooling systems and lawn care; two public golf courses - one managed by Pacific Hills Country Club and another by R&D Golf Course & Resort; four miles of trails - some providing access for residents to hiking off state routes 629 north to Mentor Township and east to Akron; five restaurants - all family-owned - serving up national cuisine such as pizza, Chinese food, burgers/pizza etc.; one hospital - Regional Medical Center of Northwest Ohio - which provides medical services for residents of surrounding counties According to the 2000 Census there were 431 people residing within village limits while according to the 2010 census there were 521 people living within village boundaries

The first permanent settler in what is now Ashland was John Page on November 12, 1812. He and his family moved to the area from Kentucky. The township was organized on March 15, 1827 and named for General David Wilkinson (1775-1848), who had been military governor of Northwest Ohio during the War of 1812. The first post office in Ashland was established on December 6, 1827. It served as the mouth of Beaver Creek until it was discontinued on July 3, 1840 due to competition from larger towns like Portsmouth and Lima. In 1851, James Buchanan built a sawmill just outside of town on Beaver Creek River with lumber concessions from Nathan Bedford Forrest II (1819-1893). This mill became one of the largest producers of lumber in central Ohio until it closed in 1907. Furthest east from Cincinnati is downtown Akron which has an estimated population over 100K+ according to 2016 estimates
Ashland was founded in 1792 by John Ash and his family. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of oil in 1857, and by 1861 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1865, the city was renamed Toledo after the Battle of Fallen Timbers. Toledo became the capital of Ohio in 1913 and Ashland continued to serve as its second-largest municipality until its annexation by Toledo in 1934.
