Ashland is a city in Ashland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ashland County and part of the Akron metropolitan area. The first known permanent settler in what is now Ashland County was John Wesley Powell, who discovered a mineral vein near present day Akron on October 15, 1817 while exploring for minerals in the Great Lakes region. The site where Powell found his ore vein has been located by humans since at least 1000 AD when Native Americans mined coal there. In 1814, Anthony Wayne founded Cincinnati as the capital of Ohio due to its location on the southern border of Indiana Territory. When Ohio became a state in 1793, Anthony Wayne's territory included much of what today includes Ashland and other parts of Summit and Cuyahoga Counties. In 1821, David Brown established Brownsville about east-northeast of present day Akron on land that he had purchased from the Shawnee tribe after they had fought a three-year war against United States forces during Indian Removal policies under President George Washington. The town grew rapidly because it was accessible by wagon road from western Pennsylvania and because it sat atop an important natural resource: coal. By 1830 Brownsville had a population of 624 residents; by 1840 it had grown to 1,542 people with 513 businesses). During this time period many new industries were establishes such as tanning (the first tannery being built in town in 1830), brewing (the establishment of two small breweries within one year) and distilling (the development of whiskey). Brownsville also hosted an annual fair which attracted traders from all over eastern Pennsylvania as well as northern Indiana and Cleveland until it ceased operation in 1845 after General James Ketchum destroyed most of Brownsville's infrastructure due to financial difficulties caused by American involvement in Mexican–American War expansionism. Afterward much residential growth occurred along Woodstock Road which ran through town north-south and east-west before terminating at Stroudsburg Boulevard just south of where modern day University Circle sits today .
