In 1840, John Baily founded a flour mill on what is now Wells Street in downtown Ashland. In 1861, he built a dam across the Scioto River to power his mill until it burned down in 1865; this incident made him an early advocate for using waterpower for mills instead of coal-fired power plants." Ashland, Ohio is a small town in the southwestern corner of Ohio. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lima-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1812, Ashland was founded as a post office on the Scioto River by John Ash and his family. It received its name from General George Washington's home state of Virginia. In 1814, when Ohio became a state, Ashland became its capital. The first courthouse in Ashland was built in 1816 and it served as the seat of government until 1830 when the new capitol building was constructed. The town had two hotels until 1907 when one burned down and another closed for business reasons. The last hotel in Ashland operated from 1928 to 1951 before being replaced by a community center that still stands today. The town also has several churches which serve as landmarks in the community including First Baptist Church (founded 1816), Second Baptist Church (1825), Methodist Episcopal Church (1829), Presbyterian church (1905), and Baptist church (1928).
The Ashland community was founded in 1814 by John and Mary (Foley) Smith. The town grew rapidly and soon became a center of commerce and industry. In the 1830s, Ashland became known for its manufacturing plants such as the Columbus Machine Works, the American Can Company, and the Ashland Hams plant. By 1870, the town had a population of 10,000 and was home to several large businesses including A.G. Spalding & Sons Shoes, The Ohio Rubber Company, and J.P. Morgan's bank. In 1892, Ashtale Electric Light Company was formed to provide electric lighting to rural areas of Ohio. In 1907, Ashtale merged with The Toledo Electric Company to form The Toledo Electric Corporation. In 1940, Ashtale merged with General Electric to form GEICO Holdings Incorporated which continued until 1992 when it was purchased by Chrysler Group LLC
