Ashland, Ohio is a town in Champaign County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,516 at the 2010 census. Ashland was founded in 1813 as a small community on the Scioto River by John Ash and his family. It became an important transportation center for goods transported from the north to the south via rivers and canals. In 1838, the town was renamed after General William Henry Harrison because of his role in the American Civil War. The city of Cincinnati took over much of what had been Ashland until it merged with its neighbor Sandusky in 1968. The history of Ashland began with John Ash and his family who settled there around 1800. He named the community after himself and his brother-in-law General George Washington Carver. By 1813, ash land extended downriver from where it now stands to where Scioto Creek flows into Lake Erie. This location allowed easy access to both trade routes across Lake Erie and to other parts of Ohio. John Ashingtons son Ebenezer built a cabin on the riverbank near what is now downtown Ashland in 1814 while he awaited completion of a canal connecting Cleveland with Toledoviathe Great Miami River Chain Canal Company Limited Partnership voyageurs route that would have cut through Pennsylvania Dutch territory east of Daytonvirtually bisecting settlement between those two points along today's I-675 corridor . Construction began on this canal on September 20th,1817 but only reached its full potential effective February 14th 1830 when water levels receded making possible construction along present day Second Street which linked I-675 with Dayton.. traders soon realized that this new route offered advantages not available from either direction Via road or water transport only by sea could they reach their destinations Why build such an expensive structure when all we needed were some good boats? After several failures Ebenezer met John Stephenson one night while he was working at his father's store upriver from where today's First Street meets I-675 and they hit upon a business arrangement allowing him to supply Stephensons boat builders with wood shipped downriver then being sold off piecemeal to different merchants before finally reaching Hamiltonian shores When first activated this venture created over 350 jobs including 26 aboard Stephenson boats which plied their trade up & downstream! From here things really got going as Stevensons wood started being used for buildings (a few miles east of current day Third Street) as well as fencing fences & building ditches for farmsteads back then little more than crude shelters today! In addition many businesses grew out side what are now Downtown streets like 2nd & Elm Streets housed stores #1&2 etc., banks (remaining active till 1966), post office (1926), theatre(1929), Science Museum(1985). All these businesses flourished due to cheap labor brought over by waves of immigrants following railroad development throughout Northeast Ohio during late 19th century exclaiming "Ashland will become America!" Imbued with traditions associated with its founder John Ashington's culture wide millrace system that spanned most or all rural areas west central OH., shops continued open Sunday even tho family bread stopped baking Sept 1939; services continued Wednesday evening Catholic Mass starting 3pm Weddays thru Saturday nights; schools closed Thursdays except 1st week school yearbook page 9 showed girls playing dodgeball outside high school
Ashland, Ohio was founded in 1788 by the Ashland family. The first settler in what is now Ashland was John Ashland who built a cabin on the current site of the city. In 1814, James Knoppers moved to Ashland from Delaware and started a grocery store. In 1827, John Atherton bought the grocery store from Knoppers and renamed it The Market House. In 1830, Edwin Ladd purchased The Market House and erected a three-story brick building that served as the city's first courthouse. The building burned down in 1836 but was rebuilt and used as the city hall until it burned down again in 1886. In 1840, Abraham Lincoln visited Ashland while attending a class at Delaware College and decided to move to the town to pursue his career as an lawyer. He bought a home near Main Street and lived there until he became President of America in 1865.
