Amherst, Ohio is a town located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous community in Amherst County. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area and is bordered by Cuyahoga County to the south and east, Lake Erie to the north and west, and Youngstown County to the northwest. The first European settlement in what is now Amherst was made in 1792 when George Washington's father-in-law James Ketchum purchased land from a group of Native Americans near present day Mentor. In 1801, John Dolan founded Dolan & Sons lumber company on what became known as Main Street in what is now Amherst Township. The town was named for General Jonathan Amherst who fought with Washington during the American Revolution. In 1815, General Amos Mifflin sold 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of his land southwest of present-day Parkersburg to Nathan Bedford Forrest for $5 per acre ($100 per lot). This purchase helped make Amherst one of Forrest's most important military bases during the Civil War years because it allowed him access to significant amounts of coal that he used to power his cannons and rifles. In 1851, Joshua Speed began construction on a reservoir that would become Metropole Dam which forms today's border between Cuyahoga County and Youngstown County

This led to the development of what is now known as a Schmidt camera – an instrument specifically designed for photographing small objects at close ranges without having them reflected off other surfaces nearby

In 1814, General Anthony Wayne's army passed through Amherst while moving westward after defeating the British in Canada. The town was founded as a post office in 1827, and became part of what is now Ottawa County when that county was created from parts of Erie and Steuben counties in 1829. In 1907, Amherst College opened its doors to students from all over Ohio. Today, Amherst remains one of the most vibrant communities in northwestern OH/USA.

In 1841 the town passed through a series of mergers and acquisitions, becoming finally incorporated as a city in 1853. The city experienced continued growth throughout the 20th century, reaching its peak population size in 1960. During that decade Amherst also hosted the Republican National Convention.
