The town was founded in 1803 by pioneer George Washington Carver as a post office named after his native village of Carverstown in Virginia. The name was changed to Amherst in 1825 when land near downtown became open for settlement. The present day city of Cleveland was incorporated as part of that consolidation. The busy shipping channel on the Cuyahoga River Avengers Bridge made it difficult for early settlers to grow crops, so they turned to fishing instead; carpentry became an important trade industry; and hunting and trapping became common pursuits due to widespread but undocumented tiger sightings along the banks of the river during this time period . By 1870, however, grain farming had become a mainstay among Amherst's residents and several mills were built around that time including one by James Mott which still stands today as a museum attraction known as "Mott's Mill." In 1895-1901, construction began on what would become known as "the Great Lakes Exposition", which took place at Amherst's fairgrounds from April 25-29th,. One hundred thirty thousand people visited during its three days of operation - more than any other exposition ever staged in America at that time! In 1916 local Orchard City voters ratified a charter providing for annexation by Amherst into Cleveland effective July 1, 1916; this event created an area now comprising most of north central Cleveland with some portions extending into Akron and Canton suburbs also annexed later that year. During World War II many local men were drafted into service and sent off to fight overseas; however much evidence suggests only a few residents actually left their homes or businesses behind while others may have simply chosen not to participate because they could not support themselves financially while away from home . The village's charter was amended to allow for merchants to build stores within its boundaries without having to apply for city status; this helped make Amherst one of the most prospering villages in northeast Ohio during the 19th century.
