Amherst, Ohio is a small town in the heart of the Buckeye State. The population was 12,546 at the 2010 census, making it the 11th most populous municipality in Ohio. Amherst is located on the southern bank of the Mahoning River and has a rich history dating back to 1817. Amherst was founded by John Amos Simons as an agricultural settlement on what is now College Street. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, peas and other vegetables for local markets and sold their products from store fronts or against walls along College Street. In 1850, Amherst became part of newly formed Summit County and experienced dramatic growth with new construction including a sawmill, gristmill and post office. By 1870, mills had been built at both ends of College Street while many homes were erected along Elmwood Avenue which served as commercial corridors for area farmers. In 1881, when Macedonia Township was organized within Summit County, Amherst became its administrative center with a courthouse and jail/police station. In 1907-1908 (the last years of Progressive Era), various stores were built along Elmwood avenues such as Joplin's Department Store which later became Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.'s corporate headquarters until its closure in 1978; operateeler Mrs. Atherton's general store; two schools - one for boys operated by private subscription (1892-1901) and open to all children (1902); two churches - First Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (founded 1872) across from school; Baptist Tabernacle opened in 1898 also across from school; movie theater - Regal Theater opened on Euclid Avenue adjacent to School House in 1922 followed by United Artists Theatre on North Main Street which closed in 1984; several amusement parks including Six Flags Over OhioOpened amusement park attractions like Aquamarine Springs Racetrack Race Course in 1971 while still operating today except parts closed down during World War II due to bombing raids; Today Amherst experiences continued growth with several major expansions including: Amherst High Schoolopened in 1957 which contains over 500 students*and offers advanced courses leading up to college level*and serves as the hometown high school for mayor John Cranford* ; The University of Akronopened its doors after decades of planning and investment*became world-renowned for its colleges/universities such as Case Western Reserve University *and Medical University Of Cleveland * ; There are also numerous small businesses throughout town that provide services such as grocery stores*, gas stations*, mechanics*, hair shops*, etc.* .
