Amherst was founded in 1813 by General James Wilkinson as an outpost on the Scioto River to support his army during the War of 1812. In 1828, Amherst became a town and was renamed after James A. Amherst, a congressman from Massachusetts who had served in Washington during the presidency of John Quincy Adams. The townsite grew rapidly due to its strategic location on high ground between two major rivers and its access to transportation routes including the Erie Canal and roadways connecting Cincinnati and Cleveland. By 1830, the town had become an important commercial center with buildings such as Halle's Wharf (later known as Oneonta), King's Hall (now a museum), and South Union Street Department Store being built along North Union Street near today's State Fairgrounds. In 1837, Amherst became an incorporated village under amending laws passed by then-Mayor Job Chase; this markedthe beginning of what would be one of largest growths for Amherst over time until it attained its current size in 1860 when much of what now makes up downtown was developed along Second Avenue south from High School Square; todayÎs University Circle also contains some older buildings dating back to that period including First Presbyterian Church which opened in 1830 and housed both local school district officials (1850–1915) During World War II, many industries were located within or around Amherst; these include aircraft manufacturing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base; automotive production at Chrysler Corporation's Toledo plant; tires and related products at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's Elmira plant; pulpwood processing at United States Paper Company's Lebanon mill before it merged into Imperial Paper Corporation in 1961 In recent decades there have been several changes take place withinAmhersts borders: most notably Downtown developing closer to Interstate 71 while housing continue development east off I-71 ; more recently there has been significant redevelopment taking place on former industrial sites neighboring Downtown while still preserving some historic buildings The first Europeans to visit what is now known as western Ohio were French traders traveling through present day Indiana in 1665 when they discovered rich lands beyond their projected route via surveyor Jacques Marquette This area included present day Lucas County but only extended upriver so far as Greencastle before turning eastward again along present day Route 66 before terminating at modern day Warsaw . This area remained unpopulated for centuries until British colonists arrived late eighteenth century looking for new land to settle following their defeats against France British colonists found little interest in this empty area so instead began exploration southwestward across present day Kentucky where they discovered vast amounts of natural resources including coalitions formed resistance against British rule soon leading to Colonel George Rogers Clark’s expedition establishing Fort Pitt near Pittsburgh . Clark’s force encountered Native Americans here resulting in several skirmishes with small groups numbering only about 25 men total fighting off waves numbering hundreds upon thousands of warriors over multiple days resulting in what is considered one of history’s largest battles ever fought…the battle that eventually led to American independence After exploring this region extensively, Englishman James Wilkinson settled here permanently circa 1813 based on his belief that “Ohio [was] excellent land for agriculture” he named his new settlement after himself – James A. Amherst – symbolizing America’s determination not just to expand west but also recognize Britain’s right to exist among her fellow nations Although initially founded mainly for military purposes due proximity to warring Canadian forces stationed nearby, early settlers quickly realized that farming potential here was very strong given available land and hostile Native American populations ) After Confederation (the creationof Canada) Oklahoma Territory was organized following Mexican–American War with portions extending into northeastern Illinois , southeastern Michigan , northwestIndiana etc ceding all claimed Indian lands northwest thereof finally becoming Kansas Territory when Nebraska statehood came about Theater productions staged here have often garnered critical acclaim earning numerous awards throughout their tours exposing audiences inside various communities where residents live close enoughfor daily interaction
