Amherst, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and is the county seat of Trumbull County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 362, up from 350 at the 2000 census. The town has been home to some of America's earliest settlers and has been an important center for education and commerce since its founding in 1814. Amherst is also known for its annual corn festival, which takes place in May. The first person to settle in what is now Amherst Township was John Nevin, who arrived there on July 5, 1814. He built a cabin on what is now North Main Street and named it Nevin's Corners after his father-in-law Nathaniel Nash who had settled nearby two years earlier. One resident remembers that when they first moved there "it was a very dreary country". Nevertheless, early residents were determined to make their mark on this new community and soon erected structures such as buildings number 2 on present day Elm Street (now part of Park Avenue), 3 on State Route 33 (now First Avenue), 4 on Delaware Road (now Mill Lane), 5 at what is now South College Avenue (later renamed US 21) and 6 near where First avenue forks today (now Elmwood Drive). In 1830 the village of Amherst was organized with a schoolhouse, market house and five homes as its cornerstone institutions; these remain extant to this day including one currently used as office space by the city Planning Commission duringowntown planning meetings. In 1835 John Witherspoon became pastor at Stowe Methodist Church while located just south of present day Amherst off Delaware Road; he later served as pastor at Elmwood United Methodist Church until his death in 1881. It wasn't until 1840 when Daniel Webster began preaching services at walnut orchard north of Main Street that church members began referring to their meeting place as Webster Chapel or simply “the Chapel” due to its close proximity to both public schools and other businesses in town center –today’s Webster Road area–100+ feet away from all but one streetlight! Amherst quickly emerged as an important center for education with Jonathan Dayton graduating from Yale University's class of 1795 three years before Trumbull County formed; he would go onto teach here for over twenty years before dying suddenly young in1849 aged only 25 years old while serving as Principal of Nevin Academy; one may remember him most notably for having written The Grapes Of Wrath which was published posthumously in 1951 by Random House/Doubleday & Co.. One can still purchase copies reprinting this classic novel today! Aided by excellent seamanship achieved through early charting techniques conducted hereabouts we soon found ourselves actively engaged [in] many enterprises…including building our first wharf next door [to current day State Route 33], erecting our first store building adjacent thereto [and] purchasing land east side thereof parcel number 7’….A very busy little town we rapidly became!" Amherst, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Champaign County. The population was 33,827 at the 2010 census. Amherst was founded in 1814 by Joel Chandler Harris as an agricultural village on the Scioto River near what is now Amherst Heights and became a town in 1835 when it annexed the villages of Highland and Northfield. It became a city on July 1, 1920. The name "Amherst" is derived from an Indian word meaning "place where many plants grow." The first settler in what would become Amherst was Hugh Halliday who arrived in 1795 with his families from Scotland. He established himself as one of the early landowners along the Scioto River and platted out three townships including Highland, which he named for his home country of Scotland; Northfield for his native land of England; and Scioto for his Scottish family's estate on that river north of Cleveland. In 1830, Athens Township also joined the community forming what would become Champaign County. In 1840, Joel Chandler Harris set up shop here to sell newspapers after leaving Cincinnati to start his own paper company with partners John Fenton (the future editor-in-chief of The Cincinnati Enquirer) and Nathaniel Dawes (founder and publisher of Harper's Weekly). In 1843, Amherst had its first election as a township with Aldermen George Muhlenberg (2nd) and Ebenezer Richardson (3rd), both men graduated from Union College with degrees in law enforcement/police science under then-Governor Andrew Johnson Aldermanic elections were held every two years until 1907 when they were replaced by municipal elections districted into wards which continued until 1965 when they were abolished due to partisan control over government machinery during Reconstruction era On February 2nd 1870 James Hogg organized a group composed mostly farmers led by Samuel Wurzelbacher to purchase 350 acres east side of Scioto River opposite present day downtown Amherster from Nicholas Haines for $1 per acre They called their new township "Hogtown". On May 15th 1870 residents met at Hogtown Tavern to organize themselves into committees to take care of such things askelpsing cattle, planting onions etc., setting up meetinghouses etc., electing officers & Board members
