In 1840s and 1850s, Amherst experienced growth as a result of its location on two important transportation routes: The Erie Canal connecting Buffalo with Detroit and then west to Chicago via Ionia County; and The Huron Road linking Detroit with Cleveland. Manufacturing began to boom in this period as farmers turned to growing crops for local consumption instead of shipping goods long distances. Growth also accelerated during World War II when many factories were set up along interstate highways for war production like planes, tanks, trucks and ships. After decades of decline during the late 20th century caused by economic problems such as outsourcing (the use of lower-quality labor overseas), suburbanization (the addition of large homes without close access to downtown) and changes in demography (a decrease in birth rates), Amherst reached its current level of population density around 2000 when it annexed land around White Lake from Muskegon Heights Township. Economic development has since picked up with some businesses moving into new facilities or expanding their operations into adjacent townships while others have closed down or relocated due to competition from online shopping malls or other forms of rapid urban sprawl outside the bounds of traditional small towns throughout Michigan

Amherst, Ohio is a town in Ashland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,899 at the 2010 census. Amherst is part of the Cincinnati Metropolitan Area. The town was founded in 1836 by Nicholas Wickersham and his family. In 1839 the Wickershams moved to what is now called West Amherst and began growing corn and hay. They also started a lumber business. In 1847 they built a gristmill on the west side of the river which became known as "the mill wheel". In 1870 the town voted to separate from Ashland County and become its own municipality. It had a population of 584 residents when it seceded from Ashland County. The first mayor was John A. Herrick and the first treasurer was Joseph Hickey. The mill closed in 1906 but reopened in 1912 as an clothing store with local produce being sold inside and out on Market Street near where modern day FirstEnergy Center stands today
In 1801, Amherst became the home of a smallpox outbreak that killed more than 60 people. The area was also the site of one of the largest battles in American history, the Battle of Fallen Timbers.
