Amherst, Ohio is a small town located in the northwest corner of Ohio. The population was 3,431 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH metropolitan area. The community is named after George Washington Amherst, who resided there in 1792. The first residents of what would become Amherst were Native Americans who hunted and gathered around a small body of water known as "the Great Miami". In 1813, Major General Anthony Wayne built Fort Dearborn on the east side of Little Miami River to protect that location from Indian attack. A smaller fort called Fort Stephenson was also constructed here in 1814. In 1827, James Wilkinson purchased land west of Amherst from the Shawnee nation for $5,000 dollars. Wilkinson's family founded the town they named after him – Wilkinson Township – in 1830. That same year saw another key development when Cincinnati entrepreneur John Dennison offered to donate land to the township if it could build a road from his mill at Greenfield to Amherst. The townsite was dedicated on July 1, 1830 by Colonel Nathan Lyon with an audience including President James Kapp and Governor David Yates. The early years at Amherst were difficult because many people came looking for religious reasons for heading west during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). As a result, few pioneers actually arrived until much later in 1849 when Congress passed an act authorizing construction of roads statewide and making it allowable for white men only to travel through Indiana Territory into Ohio without meeting certain conditions. This opened up new opportunities for folks like George Washington Amish who had been living primarily within Pennsylvania since before that time! Life changed dramatically when European settlers began arriving in what would become Ohio throughout the 19th century due mostly to wars being fought there between states over hunting grounds and other natural resources such as coal seams which lay beneath their territories (the region now known as Appalachia). Many German immigrants moved into this area during this time while others started businesses such as breweries or found work on farms which became increasingly rural following railroad construction across these regions beginning around 1870s Midwest farmland had never seen such intense development before!
