Amherst, Ohio is a town in Lorain County, Ohio, United States. The population was 21,824 at the 2010 census. Amherst is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Amherst was John Pemberton in 1814. In 1827, George Winton founded the village of Winton on the Scioto River near present-day Amherst. By 1830, all of Amherst had been platted and named except for one block that was unnamed until it became part of Easton Township on May 24, 1833. It was within this unnamed block that John Fenton erected a gristmill on the east side of Main Street in 1835 which became known as Fenton's Mill because HENRY FRANKLIN operated it until his death in 1886. A group of men from nearby Dayton bought out Fenton's share and continued to operate the mill until it ceased production in 1888; however, they are still considered founders of Amherst because they purchased most of its land and built its first homes there. In 1860, according to U.S. Census data, there were 20 people living inAmherst when it incorporated as a town; however by 1870 this number had increased to 30 due to new arrivals from other parts of Ohio and Indiana following the American Civil War (1861-1865). Of these newcomers, many were farmers who turned their properties into townships after their settlement arrived so that they could vote township trustees instead of county commissioners like those appointed by state legislatures at that time. Amherst experienced rapid growth during the 19th century thanks to both an expanding trade with neighboring states and an influx of new residents coming through Lorain County seeking opportunity and education; many young women chose to attend local colleges rather than go off to find work as women did during Reconstruction era America following slavery’s end().
