Brown & Sons, a munitions company based in Cincinnati, purchased land adjacent to what is now Amherst High School for its new factory. With world war I looming large, Brown & Sons needed more ammo than they could produce on their own premises. So they contracted with Moses Young & Company in London (later British munitions company) to produce white-hot rounds for use by the American Expeditionary Force (AEF). These rounds were designed specifically for use in rifles and machine guns; as such, they were known as “ammunition monsters” because of their size and power. Brown & Sons continued production at their new factory until World War II; during which time they produced over 150 million rounds of ammunition. However, after World War II ended there was little need for artillery ammunition so Brown & Sons mothballed their facility and sold off their remaining assets in 1949. Ammo manufacturers have resumed production again throughout the years; but it is still an expensive task to find original pieces of brown paper evidence related directly to this industry!

The first European to visit what is now Amherst was a group of Frenchmen led by Captain George Rogers Clark in 1785 during his exploring expedition through present-day Ohio. He named it for Etienne de Montresor, Count of Amherst (1595-1665), general and admiral of France's forces in North America during the early seventeenth century. When General James K. Polk succeeded General Andrew Johnson as president in 1881, he reopened federal land lying east of Cincinnati that had been closed to settlement by President John F Kennedy on the grounds that it had beenaghered for years as part of the Indian territory claimed by that nation. In 1892 Congress passed an act creating Muskingum County and providing its government with $10,000 annually from sales taxes levied on agricultural products exported to Indiana and Pennsylvania. The town site was chosen because it lay within Muskingum County's boundaries at a bend in the River Thames south of where Warsaw lies today; this location also made possible easy access to markets for local farmers who exported their goods along Route 6 overland from central Ohio into Indiana and Pennsylvania

In 1806, George Rogers Clark drove an army across the Delaware River into Pennsylvania to fight against British forces under General Sir Henry Clinton; as a result, Amherst became part of Ohio territory while Lancaster remained part of Pennsylvania. In 1807–1808, when Ohio began to be organized as a state within the United States, Amherst had a population of just 10 residents (−1% since its creation). However, with growth in eastern Warren County due to new settlements such as Newark and Athens (both founded by Quakers),Amherst quickly grew into one of Ohio's most important communities. By 1830 it boasted a population over 1,000 (+10% since 1830). Growth continued untilthe Panicof 1837 which caused dramatic drops in both civilian and economic activity throughout central Ohio — including rural towns such as Amherst — reaching levels not seen before or after that time. During this period many businesses closed their doors because people could not afford to pay high prices for food or goods times increasing competition from other states' economies during hard times. One local business that thrived during this time was The Pickwick Brewery which produced beer outfitted with advertising slogans like " brewed for your stomach – not your head" (). Other businesses during this difficult time include The Gristmill which ground cornmeal into flour for sale to farmers and households; The Washburn Furniture store located on Main Street; and Mr Fogg's Brewery which made ginger ale out OFercuring exclusive rights with Great Lakes Beverage Company (). These companies survived thanks to their loyal customers who did not lose faith in them despite difficult times (), however many others failed early on in Cleveland's fledgling metropolis () . In 1812, Amherst Township was organized. The first settler in the township was James Hinton. In 1827, Amos Noble donated land to the township for a public square. In 1830, John Wills founded the Presbyterian church in Amherst. The townspeople built a gristmill on the site in 1832 and a school in 1835. The first post office was established in Amherst on April 15, 1840 by Jeptha Mason. In 1846, the name of the town changed from Amherst to Athens because of an influx of settlers from Athens, Ohio.
