The history of Alliance, Ohio is lengthy and includes many important moments in the city’s past. The city was founded on October 25, 1803 by John Reynolds and other investors from Pennsylvania. It was named for a small community in what is now West Virginia that had been abandoned after the Mingo Indians destroyed it. The town quickly grew to become an important post on the Ohio River, with its own courthouse and jail. In 1824, Alliance became the first town in Ohio to prohibit slavery. Over time, however, this stance softened; by 1850, most of Alliance had come over to supporting slave-ownership. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Alliance sided with Confederate forces and surrendered soon after. After the war ended, many of its residents returned home and continued to support slavery until it was abolished in 1865. Since then, Alliance has undergone several changes both positive and negative. In 1976, it became the first community in Ohio to be turned into an urban area through a process known as “ deurbanization”. This change saw much growth within the city limits as people began moving away from their rural roots for work opportunities in larger municipalities nearby. However, this process has also led to some controversies; for example, there have been numerous complaints about traffic congestion within central Alliance since deurbanization occurred (a situation which seems unlikely to improve anytime soon). Despite these mixed fortunes over the years - both good and bad - one thing remains constant: The passion among those who live and work in Alliance for its unique culture and history!

In the early 1800s, two families, the Wilsons and the Harts, lived in what is now Alliance, Ohio. The Wilson family came from a small town in North Carolina and were early settlers in this area. John C. Wilson was one of the first white men to purchase land in what is now Alliance. He built a cabin on a rise overlooking his property and named it “Wilson’s Cabin” in 1819. In 1830, John C. Wilson (father) died and was succeeded by his son-in-law James Hartsock Wilson (son). James Hartsock Wilson became engaged to Harriet Beecher Stowe (daughter of abolitionist minister Joshua Stowe). They married on October 6, 1849 at Fayette County Court House in Cincinnati. Their first child was born on December 5, 1850: Harriot Ransom StoweWilson (mother). The couple moved to Union County, Ohio in 1853 and soon started a family of their own with another daughter: Carrie Chapman SmithStowe (wife). In 1865, after returning home from service as colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War – he had fought for the Confederacy – James Hartsock Wilson died at age 73 years old from an illness he contracted while serving; Carrie Chapman SmithStowe continued raising her children alone until their deaths at age 86 years old each in 1937 and 1941 respectively. On November 3, 1865 Charles Sumner delivered his famous speech “The Fourteen Points” which called for discrimination against slavery because it existed within our country according to its natural order rather than through human evil! The following year Harper Lee wrote To Kill a Mockingbird which tells the story of Atticus Finch – an Alabama lawyer who defends phenom Jemima Cobb – when she is accused of murder! After Harper Lee’s death in February 1960 she bequeathed her entire Collection of over ninety books including To Kill a Mockingbird to Auburn University where they are currently studied! The history of Alliance begins with Captain Nathaniel Lyon who charted new land grants starting around 1795 AD when he purchased 125 acres near present day Alliance from David Ralston Hope. Lyon named his tract “Pittsburgh Township” after Pittsburgh Pennsylvania where many pioneers had come before him such as Benjamin Franklin and George Washington Carver. Captain Nathaniel Lyon fulfilled his promise to rename Pittsburg Township after Philadelphia Pennsylvania because that city had become known for its industrial success due to its trade with Great Britain during the Revolutionary War era. By 1807 there were only 4 residents living within Pittsburg Township limits; by 1830 there were 100 people living there! Over time more settlers arrived but most notably General Anthony Wayne who founded Steubenville Ohio about 1796 AD when he traveled downriver along present day Wooster Road searching for British forces under General Howe that had invaded America via Canada! Eventually General Wayne discovered Indian settlements all along these same riverside areas providing strategic footholds against possible British attacks! Today we enjoy excellent access to both downtown Cleveland OH as well as much of rural western Ohio thanks largely to Ulysses S Grant Boulevard which runs parallel route between Cleveland OH & alliance county
On October 1, 1814, the first land grant in what is now Alliance, Ohio was made to John C. Fremont by the United States Congress. The original grant included land that forms the eastern edge of present-day Akron and parts of Canton and Mayfield townships.
