Alliance, Ohio was the first settlement in what is now the state of Ohio. The area that would become Alliance was part of the Northwest Territory, which was organized after the United States acquired it from Great Britain in 1803. The territory extended from present-day Cincinnati to Louisville and back to Dayton.
Alliance is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Summit County. The population was 37,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area and is located on the southern edge of Akron, one of Ohio's major commercial and industrial centers. The site where Alliance now stands was once an agricultural village known as Lickstown. A railroad station was built there in 1881 by Cincinnati entrepreneur Jepson Gurney and named after him, but it was abandoned by 1923 when the railway was replaced by the Cleveland-Akron Line. In 1925, Gurney donated land for a new town to be built on his property east of Lickstown Commons; this became Alliance. The original name for Alliance (and Summit) Valley had been Ridgecrest before it changed to Summit in 1929 because local leaders felt that it sounded more like a mountain range than an valley. In 1931, MacMahon & Sons operated a cotton gin near what is now downtown Alliance with three employees; this began what would become one of America's largest cotton gin industry operations until it closed in 1984. In 1935, General Motors purchased Parma Manufacturing Company from George Wurster and renamed it GM Cadillac Division; prior to that, Cadillac had been produced by Forrester Brothers Limited under license from French manufacturer Peugeot Industries NV.. GM later sold Cadillac Division to Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation in 1990 and then merged with Mazda Motor Corporation in 1999 to formToyota Motors Corporation LLC.. In 2003,GM announced plans to close two manufacturing sites – Onenear Lima, Ohio (the former Studebaker factory) and another near Cincy (the former Maybach plant). The closure left about 1,,000 jobsless within GM’s North American Automotive Operations.. In late 2006 Chrysler Group plc announced its intent to purchase Pontiac Group Inc.'s Indianapolis-based automotive parts company from Italian automaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles SRL for $8 billion including 7% stakes in both companies.. On July 26th 2007 Fiat Chrysler Automobiles SRL announced its plan to sell its investment stake in Pontiac Group Inc.'s Indianapolis-based automobile parts company back into trust for future use so as not to impairment or violate United States trade secrets related thereto(See also: "Fiat Chrysler Automobiles SRL announces tentative sale of Indianapolis-based Parts company" New York Times article dated 12/5/2007 ). On October 20th 2007 Fiat Chrysler Automitures S RL finalized selling their interest(See: "Chrysler group announces tentative sale of assets including Indy-based Parts company") which completes their acquisition spree across all automakers starting with Pontiac GroupInc.(See: "Pontiac Group Plans To Sell Assets To Chrysler" Detroit News article dated 10/20/2007 ). On November 5th 2007 Fiat Chryslers announcement that they have agreed terms with Ford Motor Co., headcount will total around 126 000 people over 4 years at Ford Hamtramck Assembly Plant effective January 1st 2008.( See: "Ford tells Scion Infiniti carmaker about offer" Detroit News article dated 11/5/2007 ). Alliance, Ohio was founded in 1811 by General George Washington and his army as a military post on the Scioto River. The town was named for Commodore John D. Stockton, who had led the American squadron that destroyed the Spanish treasure fleet in Havana in 1808. In 1831, Alliance became a consolidated city with a population of over 20,000 people. It experienced rapid growth during the 1830s and 1840s as businesses opened up along the river and in new towns west of Alliance. The Panic of 1837 caused economic stagnation and social unrest in Alliance. Businesses closed their doors and people lost jobs or money. Poverty increased among residents, contributing to an increase in crime rates. Conditions got so bad that some people moved out of town altogether. In 1840, Mayor James Kapp declared martial law to try to stop the violence and looting that had broken out throughout the city center. Alliance's decline came about due to many factors such as its location on one of Ohio's most reliable transportation routes, its lack of industry or commerce outside of agriculture, its high taxes which funded government programs rather than creating wealth for its citizens, and finally, another Panics within few years following Wars with Mexico (1846-48) which drove many potential settlers away from central Ohio because of fear for their safety at homecoming celebrations (Larkin). After a century of growth and progressivism at Alliance – until it ended tragically with an act by City Council members that emptied the city’s coffers – it is difficult not to see why this small town has been so overshadowed by larger cities over time: It’s easy to forget just how important small towns are when looking at larger metropolitan areas across America; but size doesn’t always equate success or stability over time (Wright).
