The land that is now Alliance was part of what was known as the Northwest Territory. This territory included parts of present-day Ohio and Indiana. In 1816, President James K. Polk made a decision to split this territory into two parts, with Kentucky taking theNW Territory while Ohio took the eastern portion. This created a problem for both parties because it left much of southwestern Indiana still within Kentucky’s boundaries. The situation got complicated when farmers in southeastern Indiana began to grow crops outside theKentucky borders and demanded their own settlers be given space on their properties within Illinois instead of being taxed by Kentucky. Connecticut also wanted its share of this new territory so it sided with Ohio over Kentucky, which caused problems for both states until Congress intervened in 1820 and gave each state its own residents and property rights again. Today, there are many reminders from history about how important Alliance was during this time period including several museums located in town such as The Old Union County Courthouse Museum which features exhibits about early pioneer life and settlement in what is now Alliance; The State Historical Library has an extensive collection about American Indian Wars; and The David Day Collection contains artifacts from various aspects of local history including art, agriculture, education and more dating back to before there were any towns in what is now Alliance!
