In 1821, when President James K. Polk extended United States citizenship to all free white men living within five miles of any fort or navy Yard (other than Missouri), Alliance became part of that new territory as well. The downtown area has been renovated several times over the years including a renovation project completed in 2006 that added new sidewalks and public art along with new trash cans, trees and lighting to improve pedestrian flow and create a more vibrant atmosphere throughout downtown. The $15 million project also included construction of two large towers – one on State Street (now home to Nationwide Arena) and another on High Street – which are both used for commercial purposes today but once served as offices for local businesses during late 19th century when Alliance was still part of Jefferson County (an agricultural county). On November 2, 1810, the first permanent Anglo-American settlement in what is now Alliance, Ohio was founded. The town of Akron was founded about a mile east of the present day town of Alliance. It is said that General James Wilkinson and his militia were the first white men to set foot in what is now Alliance. The town was named after General George Washington’s home state of Virginia.
