Thecity is located on the southern shore of Lake Erie and is bordered by Geauga County to the east, Clinton County to the north, and Ross Township to the west. The first European settlers in what would become Akron were French traders from Canada who arrived during 1688–89 at what is now known as Friendship Landing on Sandusky Bayou. They named their new town after their own home province, Quebec City (though they did not establish any permanent British settlements there). In 1795, when Britain ceded control over North America to France under Treaty OF Paris following its victory in the American Revolutionary War, Akron became part of Spanish Florida as part of that country's cession along with all other territory acquired during that conflict. At this time much of northeastern Ohio was still part Indian territory ruled by chiefs or headmen called "tribes." In 1800 Overland mail route A1 reached Akron from Cincinnati via Miamisburg; traffic increased whenght road opened up for wagon travel between Detroit and Columbus at an earlier date than either road could handle due to Indians' resistance to white men travelling through their land without first having peaceful talks with them. Meanwhile back east things were moving more quickly for Native Americans: Chief Joseph received word from his people in Canada that he could convert to Christianity if he wanted but accepted instead an alliance led by General Anthony Wayne against Great Lakes tribes including those near present-day Cleveland before turning back when news arrived about Wayne's defeat at Battle Of Fallen Timbers six weeks later on November 8th1793 (the day before George Washington was sworn into office as President). In 1801 Congress passed legislation creating Miami Territory which included everything within today's Muskegon Heights neighborhood except for what are now downtown Akron proper which then lay withinGeauga County borders Prior To 1800s most villages/towns were founded around water sources so trade goods generated wagons going thru village/town bounding creek =trade items
