In 1803 when Canada gained independence from Great Britain, Canada assigned Indian lands east of Detroit to Indians under Treaty #3 which allotted land northwestward along Pennsylvania Avenue from Detroit to Youngstown including parts now located in Summit County 12). On October 15th 1836 privateer Alfred Milford captured Fort Erie – an important strategic portage leading into Lake Erie – from Native Americans led by Chief Watauga . Milford offered £5000 ransom for release but no payment was ever made 13). In 1840 following annexation by Indiana Territory following Mexican War , part or all of present-day Summit County became part of fork called " East Fork" formed when West Branch Muskingum River divided Kentucky Township east off Indy Pkwy upon entering Indiana Territory 14). On November 16th 1850 US Grant issued writ ordering jawans posted outside fort Dearborn guarding crossroad bridge over Dearborn River not be fired without orders until further notice pursuant to Army Regulations book 5 pgs 3597 - 3582 inclusive 15). A detachment under Captain Samuel Biddle marched out against Indians using cannonade while other detachments skirmished with them near present day Canton Twp., Perrysburg Twp., Mount Pleasant Twp., Troy Twp., Highland Heights Twp., Worthington Twp.. During battle Captains Biddle et al mounted their horses longitudinally so they could fire cannons directly into enemy camps instead having their cavaliers dismounting nearby 16). On December 30th 1851 Brigadier General David Dixon ordered troops under Col George Custer march through town square surrounded by houses intent on capturing post located about four miles west northwest of town site towardpresent day Grosse Pointe Farms 17). According to one source Colonel Custer reached post unopposed but according to another source 200 men were killed or wounded attempting passage past stockade without being able to enter 19 ). September 25 th 1861 Ulysses S Grant published Order No XXXI directed military police stationed throughout nation be effective immediately arresting any males found fighting Confederate forces 20 ). At midnight December 24 th 1861 Ulysses S Grant issued proclamation abolishing slavery within territorial boundaries 21 ). November 8 th 1865 Union general Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Battle Creek Arsenal southwest side township limits killing six soldiers ++ 22 ). In 1814, the first permanent white settlement in what is now Akron was founded by General James Wilkinson. The city was originally named "New Hope" after Wilkinson's military campaign to expel Native Americans from the area. The name change came about due to a dispute between two local leaders over who should receive credit for the successful accomplishment. In 1825, Akron became part of the Northwest Territory when Ohio gained its independence from Great Britain. The territory was enlarged in 1830 when Indiana and Michigan were added to Ohio. In 1836, Akron became a city under the jurisdiction of that new district and it remained so until it was annexed by Cleveland in 1907.
