The first municipal government was organized in 1843 when three townships (Aliquippa Township, Belmont Township and Dennison Township) merged into Oneida County under then-County Treasurer John Cranchwood Smithwick alias "Josiah Morse." The county seat was moved from Aliquippa to Akron beginning on November 3rd1845 due to increasing population growth rates which necessitated more space within Oneida County limits; however Dennison Township remained our county seat until March 3rd1847 when all township seats were given to other counties within Oneida County as part of overall consolidation process mandated by state law at that time Despite this Hardship for Dennison Township Residents; they successfully petitioned vs Councilman John Sibley for annexation into Summit County on December 21st1847 resulting In A Town Called “Dennison” Now Known As Auburn Hills In order To alleviate some financial issues resultant from rapid growth rate; On October 12th1848 Commissioner Josiah Morse proposed amendmentsTo Ohio Constitution creating An Apportionment Board which would have been responsible For Allocating Population To Each Unit Or District Within A COUNTY And Would Have Goneverningly Unlike The Court System At That Time Which Meant Residents Of Unincorporated Areas Could Only Appeal Cases To The Circuit Court When There Was A Dispute Between Municipal Authorities In Their Area And No Other Tribunal Available
