Akron, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Summit County. In 1825–26, under construction by General David Glasscock during Jackson's presidency as part of plans for enlarging central Ohio into an national territory, an Erie Canal was built from Cleveland to Akron via becoming navigable for commerce within only ten years; development along both banks of the canal led to increased trade through town between those living on either bank and goods imported from other parts of the country arrived at marketplaces adjacent to downtown by rail or road beginning in 1830s (the first commercial streetcar service ran in downtown Akron on May 1st 1830). The growth along Saginaw Street – then called "Broadway" – accelerated after completion of streetcars running north-south down that corridor en route to Canton (now part of Cleveland) began service there on December 15th 1847; during that time Downtown Heights also began serving as a shopping center with several stores opening along Saginaw Street between Springboro Road (now University Avenue) eastward until truncated when Market Square Avenue was built southward concurrent with Woodward Avenue almost reaching Main Street today (thus Broadview Boulevard became East Main streetsToday). On October 20th 1868 Summitville Cemetery opened located behind High School which served as their interim cemetery until permanent burial could be accomplished there following passage by legislature April 6th 1870s for $4,500/yearly subscription fee plus donated land upon summitville's donation extending 3 rods northeasterly from original square lot bounded by Price Ave., Gratz Rd., Wabash Ave & Delaware Ave.; originally plat #6806 but changed name due to lack of interest so additional Plat #68975 soon followed suit having dimensions 137x81x27 feet @ 4 stories each lot frontage New Fine brick building erected october 20th1868 next door [to High School] using proceeds from stamp sales Proceeds were used for new church cornerstone & initial expenses associated with new cemetery buildings amounting now $123,524
