Ammunition history in Akron, Ohio dates back to 1892 when Johnnie Barnes and his brother George started a powder-kiting business. They supplied cartridges to the local shooting clubs. In 1905, Barnes expanded his business into ammunition sales and shipping. He eventually became one of the largest suppliers of ammunition in the United States. From 1912 until World War II, Akron was home to the US Military Ammunition Plant which manufactured explosives for use in World War I and World War II. The plant also produced munition components such as shells and bullets for artillery, tanks, jets and other military applications. The plant closed in 1966 but portions of it remain standing as part of the University Heights neighbourhood Commercial area today. Ammunition production continued through the 1970s and 1980s at two other plants located in Bradford County: Brown & Company's munitions facility west of Clevelandburg on the current site of Quaker Oats (now known as Nabisco) and Armstrong Air Products' munitions facility east of Dayton on Mohawk Road. After years of decline, production at these facilities ceased around 1990 due to increased competition from South Korea and China. However, some remnants of both brown & company’s plant still stand within walking distance of downtown Akron today while Armstrong's building is now used by Green Dot GameStop as their headquarters
