Williston is the home of Dickinson College and the Williston School District. The first Europeans to visit what is now North Dakota were fur trappers in 1778-79. They discovered an area that would become known as Dakota County when they returned from their trip in 1805. The area that would eventually be called Williston was part of South Dakota Territory until it was acquired by Dakota County in 1881. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General George Buell's army invaded South Dakota and captured Sioux City (now Rapid City). Buell ordered his forces to burn all bridges over the Missouri River so as not to give supplies to Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant. This caused great hardship on the civilian population of Dakotasburg which had no choice but to surrender after being cut off from food and water shortages within days of their capitulation. In 1865, while still living in Rapid City my husband attended a meeting held by John Fetterman at Black Hills University where he met Professor James Halliday Novera who shared with him some ideas about developing a new agricultural colony near Rugby Centre onthe Great Plains called "Hutchinson." Hutchinsons colony failed due to lack of support but Novera remained convinced about its potential for success given its isolation and opportunity for growth unlike any other place then or since! In 1969 my husband helped found Dickinson College here in Williston becoming one of America's largest private universities!
