Williston is a town in North Dakota, United States. The population was 3,823 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Grant County. The area around Williston was first settled by Europeans in 1875. The first post office in this area was established in 1876. The town name originated with the nearby Rocky Mountains, which loomed large on early settlers' minds as they looked for a place to live and work. A group of men from Illinois named themselves the "Williston Boys" and began looking for land near Yellowstone National Park. They found an offer of land east of present-day Williston and decided to move there. In 1886, they founded the townsite of Williston along Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard (now I-25). In 1907, a tornado struck the area that now makes up Williston and destroyed most of what had been built there before it hit: the original store, schoolhouse, church, water tower and other buildings were all demolished within days or weeks of each other. One resident described how things went down: "We lost everything we owned; our homes were gone... We rebuilt quickly but without any success." In 1949–50, some residents moved into a new community called Cedar Rapids after discovering an available parcel about 10 miles west of Williston on Interstate 94 (I-94 had not yet been constructed when this happened). On July 20th 1928 - just over one year after he became president - Franklin D Roosevelt delivered his keynote address at Buffalo Bill's Cody Memorial Museum commemorating 100 years since Buffalo Bill's birth in Wyoming Territory (the only time FDR ever visited North Dakota). Over 4500 people attended this event including many famous leaders such as Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Calvin Coolidge as well as Governor Nelson Rockefeller who represented New York State at Buffalo Bill's field day celebration that same year! This event helped make Buffalo Bill more known throughout America than ever before! After World War II ended in 1945 following Japan's surrender – bringing an end to World War II – much business activity took place outside of downtown Williston because so few Americans returned home during that time period due to Korea/Vietnam conflict or military deployments etc.. However business regained popularity within a few years when people started thinking about returning home again following peace treaties being signed with both countries… For almost 50 years afterwards downtown Willkinson remained largely abandoned until development finally resumed late last decade resulting in reopening several businesses including two single family residences next door to each other – one occupied since 1951 while another is currently vacant….. Downtown has experienced rapid growth Recently creating more than 25 jobsites across 6 city blocks…… Development plans are still being developed but looks very promising
