Williston was founded in 1881 as a small town in Dakota Territory. It grew rapidly, becoming the largest town in Dakota Territory by 1907. The post office moved to Williston from Fargo in 1907. The city was renamed Fargo in 1909 and its population increased to over 100,000 by 1916. In 1930, Fargo merged with Williston to form the larger city of Fargo-Wahle.
