Williston is a town in North Dakota, United States. The population was 616 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fargo County. The first permanent settler in what is now Williston was Deane A. Fenton who arrived in 1871. Fenton named his land "Fargo" after George Fargo, a settler in adjoining Dakota Territory and brother-in-law of his wife's father. The first post office was established at Fenton on November 15, 1875. In 1902, the town became a city when it annexed the adjacent village of Healyville; however, Healyville retained its own government until 1912 when it united with Williston to form an new city government under Mayor John Latham and City Councilmember C Hildebrandt (D). In 1916 the name of the city changed to Williston after local farmers donated $5,000 to make their community a municipality according to North Dakota law then being classified as an unincorporated area within municipal boundaries. In 1930, construction began on what would become one of Fargo's most famous landmarks - the Chisholm Trail Bridge which connected Fargo with Edmonton, Alberta for transportation purposes during Prohibition. The bridge still stands today and connects downtown Williston with northside neighborhoods such as Chisholm Heights and Midtown West along I-30/94 corridor
