The mill closed down in 1985 but remains preserved as part of the Dickinson County Courthouse Complex. In 1902, Williston saw its first automobile race with George William Ziegler driving an Oldsmobile chassis from Fargo to Mitchellsburg (now Rapid City) and back again within two hours - an event now considered an important milestone in American automotive history. The race took place on Saturday, June 2nd at Big White Hill near what is now Main Street and Third Avenue South. Other early racers included Edmond Osborne and Harry Carey Sr..
