On April 24, 1876, a group of white men and women led by William Jennings Bryan traveled to Williston, North Dakota in order to challenge the constitutionality of the Indian Removal Act. The act forced large numbers of Native Americans from their homes in what is now Minnesota and South Dakota and relocated them to new reservations in Oklahoma and Kansas. The men and women who traveled to Williston were motivated by their belief that the removal violated international law, was cruel and unusual punishment, and had no justification under U.S. law. They also believed that their actions would help preserve civilization on these reservations for the future generations. After traveling for two weeks, the group arrived at the town on October 5. They successfully challenged Article III of the United States Constitution, which prohibited federal governments from forcible relocation of any population without due process or compensation. This victory helped protect indigenous people from being removed from their homes without proper consideration or compensation until after Congress passed more sustainable laws such as the Indian Appropriations Bill of 1887.
