Williston is a town in Cass County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 1,565 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from pioneer Leland Stanford Williston and his wife Evalyn Searcy Williston. The first post office in Williston was established on July 25, 1881. The first settler in Williston was John Sutherlin. A post office called Butte was established in 1893, and it ceased operations in 1897. The first store in Williston was built by Sidney Hanks on the corner of First and Broadway Streets. In 1907, Gertrude Earle started a grocery store there which continued until 1978. In 1911, Jerald Pyle opened the first drive-in restaurant east of Fargo along Interstate 95/U.S./Canada Road (now I-94). It remained open until 1977 when it closed due to high expenses associated with operating a drive-in restaurant during the Great Depression years. The only other business establishment in Williston before 1907 was an agricultural supply store operated by Fenton Waddell from 1906 to 1912; however this store also closed after one year due to economic conditions similar to those that prevailed throughout much of America at that time. In 1917, Teddie Cramer opened a general merchandise store at 820 Seventh Street; this store continued operation until 1969 when it burned down due to fire danger caused by customers using fireplace burners inside the building while stored goods were being unloaded onto trucks outside for transport back into town. In 1925, local farmers organized what became known as "The Grain Growers' Association" which purchased land east of Highway 11 where they erected a farmstead known as "Williston Manor". This farmstead remains active today as part of nearby Aberdeen National Forest and has been used for research purposes by University of Montana Extension Service since 1996.. In 1927–28 Local farmer Harry Ahern took over management of "The Manor" from The Grain Growers' Association and continues to manage it today.. On October 15th 1929 about 100 men gathered at Masonic Hall for an auction presentation concerning new tract No 2 which had just been patented adjacent to present day Main Street lot # 3019B
Williston was founded in 1879 by John A. Williston and James W. Sutherlin, both from Illinois. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of oil in 1881, and by 1886 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1907, the town became the site of the world's first commercial refinery when it was built on the confluence of the Little Missouri and Big Sioux Rivers. In 1915, Williston was renamed Vernon after George Vernon Ovaltine, who had donated land for the townspeople to build a park on. In 1979, Vernon was merged with nearby Fargo to form Fargo-Vernon officials estimated that its population has grown from about 17,500 in 1978 to more than 31,000 today.
