Williston is a town in North Dakota, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dickinson County. The townsite was laid out in 1881 by A.W. Bemis and named for General Gouverneur Morris, who had been sent as an envoy to Fort Pierre to negotiate a peace treaty with Sioux Native Americans. The first post office was established in 1882, and the name of the town changed from Fort Pierre to Williston in 1905 when it became the county seat. The townsite straddles what is now the border of South Dakota and Saskatchewan on its eastern edge; however, it has never seen regular settlement by either side of that line. This ambiguity probably arose from two factors: First, because there were no trails or roadways connecting Williston with either side of the state line until after World War I; and second, because both sides claimed ownership of all land within sight or reach of their respective settlements. As a result, even though settlers began arriving in earnest around 1900, they initially did so only on behalf of friends or family members – not as part of any organized effort to form settlements on either side of the state line. This policy changed beginning in 1903 when farmers along portions of South Dakota’s east-central plains decided that they too would like to establish themselves near what then seemed like an inexhaustible bounty for agriculture – land which had been granted them primarily through Treaty Agreement negotiations dating back to 1868 between Great Britain and Native American nations (the Sioux nation being one such tribe). In response to this growing demand for settlement space by farmers throughout North Dakota and South Dakota (and also adjacent Montana), local officials convened a meeting at Williston on April 25, 1903 (the date noted on many town plat maps) under the auspices of “The western sectional committee for agricultural development” chaired by Mayor John Wehner (a native son who had come to Dickinson County earlier that year from Fargo). At this meeting representatives from various sections bordering those two states were introduced: Those from Crow Wing Territory included future governor Earl Raynor; those from Ramsey Territory included JT McDonald;those from farmsteads located northward along South Dakota’s eastern border included WF Sievers; and finally those residing within what is now North Dakota proper represented individuals such as Mr./Mrs./ Gentleman George Parkman (of Green Lake); WG Hutton (of Moose Jaw); RR Stroud (of Fargo); DR Howe (of Rapid City); HH Lowry (of Aberdeen). A vote was taken concerning whether or not to accept membership into “The Association for Pioneer Settlement in Northwestern Nebraska” which had been formed three months earlier at Lincoln pursuant to legislation passed by Congress entitled “An act providing for organizing pioneer settlers living beyond our present borders [sic] into societies for mutual support and protection” With 8yeas against 2nays it was certified that no decision had been made regarding establishment of a permanent settler community within our limits! In short order events ledto establishment not only at Williston but also Tongue River Campground about 12 miles upstream where prospectors discovered gold nuggets early in 1904 - setting off an avalanche(?) worth $2 million over 10 years! As mentioned previously some 7yeas earlier JT McDonald had emigrated permanently from Manitoba aboard SS Empire State steamer MV Olympia making his way downriver via Bozeman Landing & Cutthroat Dam -setting up shop (& later home) near present day Keystone Lake just southwesterlyOf buffalo National Monument! After spending several months exploring this area he returned upstream via Cutthroat Dam & finally Thatte Rapids Crossing before reaching Wildcat Creek January 10th 1905 - establishing himself permanently here!!! Harold Hammett spent time hereabouts workingcamping #5 among others during early 1907 gold rush days...Williston experienced its heyday during late 1800's thru mid 1900's becoming known as "Silicon Valley" due mostly Tomining activity nearby

By the end of the war, Williston had become one of the largest cities in North Dakota. However, during World War II, Williston's economy collapsed due to lack of resources and military demand for munitions. As a result, many people left the city for other parts of North Dakota. Since the 1990s, however, Williston has resumed its role as an important economic node in North Dakota thanks to its location within easy reach of both Sioux City and Fargo. In addition, new businesses have started to spawn in recent years in downtown Williston, resulting in increased commercial activity and more stability for the community.
