In 1916, the United States military established an airfield in Williston, which served as a base for aerial bombardment during World War I. The town grew rapidly during the war, thanks to its proximity to the airfield and its booming commercial sector. After the war,Williston experienced rapid growth as a result of its new economy. In 1960, it became a city. In 1996, it adopted a resolution recognizing September 11th as an attack on America that required local response.
