It is the county seat of Dakota County and the only municipality in the state of North Dakota. The town is located on the Missouri River near its confluence withthe Cannonball River. Williston was founded in 1872 by Presbyterians who traveled from Illinois to find land for their denomination's new mission station in what would become North Dakota. The original name for the community was "Wichita." The townsite that became Williston was laid out by George Burgess and John Skinner in 1871-72 based on surveys they made of Bakken country around Fargo, Minnesota. By 1875, Wichita had been renamed Williston following a referendum by residents to adopt this change. In 1879, James Fenton donated land east of Wichita to build a sawmill and it remained one of the town's most important economic engines until 1965 when oil production began to decline in North Dakota and milling ceased operations. In 1971, when Fargo went through major growth due to population increase and development along Interstate 94 (west of downtown), Williston lost its importance as an agricultural center as well as its status as a municipal government village within city limits. However, it has regained some importance since then as an educational center within city limits and because it lies on both banks of the Missouri River which provides easy access to many nearby cities including Fargo and Bismarck. Today, Williston remains a small but vibrant community with strong ties to its rural surroundings; many residents still rely on agriculture for their income or livelihoods outside of school or work opportunities available withintown limits. With few other options available for employment outside town limits during certain years (eastern Nebraska faced similar problems during Prohibition), few people left Williston over time despite declines in local businesses' fortunes; instead many people have taken positions working within city Limits while continuing their farming/ ranching practices back home which continues today albeit more slowly due to challenges associated with global warming which has increased temperatures across much of Dakotasin recent decades
