There is no record of bipods being used in the area that now includes Williston, North Dakota. However, there are references to bipods from other parts of the United States. In 1872, A.J. Goodridge described a type of platform he called an "antipod." This platform consisted of two metal bars extending out from each side of a small stand, similar to a modern day tripod. The antipod was used to hold something above the person's head and allowed for better balance while traveling or working around obstacles. In 1908, Wm E Hagedorn reported sighting a bipod-like device in central Montana which he interpreted as an early form of tripod. He suggested that this device may have been inspired by his observation of an antipod at an Indian trading post in eastern Montana. That same year, John Fritsch made reference to "bipedal walking platforms" found near Great Falls, Montana which he believed were bipods because they resembled both the ancient Antikythera Mechanism and some later designs from China and Tibet. It wasn't until 1933 that Walter Pohl provided definitive evidence that bipods actually existed in North Dakota when he discovered two pieces of metal plate with legs dating back to about 1800 AD at the site known as Girdwoodsite No 1. From this discovery, Pohl was able to demonstrate that there was indeed significant human activity in the area during this time period involved with technology development and experimentation with new devices and methods

One theory suggests that early humans might have used trees for support during short bursts of speed or when fleeing from predators but there is still no definitive proof supporting this theory. It is clear however, that once humans mastered walking on two feet we didn’t revert back to our earliest form any time soon!

Williston was founded in 1883 by Capt. John A. Williston. The town was named after Gen. George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the Dakota War of 1862-1863. In 1892, the town's first post office opened and lasted until 1907. In 1909, the first telephone line arrived in the town and remained operational until 1954. In 1916, Williston became a city and its first mayor was James W. Kline. The city annexed neighboring townships in 1924 and 1926; however, these annexations did not result in significant changes to the demographics or social fabric of either community. In 1941, during World War II, Williston became one of three cities located within Bismarck County that accepted an offer from the United States government to become part of the Nazi concentration camp system known as "Auschwitz." After being offered this opportunity by Bismarck County officials, Williston Mayor James Kline enthusiastically agreed and sent his family into hiding at a farm near Dickinson before surrendering to U-boat forces on October 1st 1941 while still living inside his home. His wife Norah (née Schmidt) successfully resisted capture and survived Auschwitz while he died as a POW later that year at Sachsenhausen concentration camp in Germany
