The town is located on the east side of the Missouri River, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Fargo and 50 miles (80 km) north of Nampa. The town was founded in 1881 by homesteaders from Illinois who had come to this area looking for land to settle. The first post office was established in 1882. In 1912, the town name was changed from German word "Willemstadt" to English word "Williston." The townsite was settled around 1800 when fur traders found land hereabouts and began trading with Native Americans. A Mission station, built in 1868 by Father Elisha Sisco, served as a center for Catholic missionary work in this area until it closed its doors in 1911 due to budget cuts. Today's old mission building still stands on the edge of town and can be visited during daylight hours only; it is not open to visitors during night hours due to safety concerns. In 1901, Williston became part of Jackson County when it was created from parts of Johnson and Morton counties. As a result of political changes that took place in North Dakota during World War I, Williston became an unincorporated community within Jackson County on September 17, 1916. On November 3, 1919 Big Horn County detached itself from Jackson County and placed into its own government; however, portions of Williston remained within Jackson County until August 1966 when they were annexed by the new Lincoln Township addition to Sioux Falls municipality

In 1912 the town built its first hotel. By 1920 Williston had over 100 residents and five businesses. The population decreased in the 1930s as World War II began and agriculture became more important in the community. However, during World War II Williston's defense industries produced some of the most advanced weapons in the world. In 1945, when North Dakota became an independent state,Williston remained an agricultural center with several small businesses still operating today.
